No Medal 6-2 Pre-game discussion?

Some players who wanted to play the Tournament games only, claimed that they longed for the simpler life without the obligation to discuss of think about stratgey or things that could be done to improve their score or performance in advance.

Personally I think this was all hogwash to cover up for other behaviour issues, but we have so far followed a pattern of keeping the tournament style games much simpler than the grander scale GOTM style games. We still test the games and give them significant thought as to how they fit into the big picture of things, but they generally have very little pregame warmup, onlys upport one spoiler thread, and do not have lots of detailed analysis that goes with the QSC period.

In the future, we may see this change, because I personally believe that the data and player feedback shows that the tournament players wanted almost all the GOTM features they just wanted those features in a dial your own difficulty game where you could guarantee you would always win and almost always win a medal.

I for one would like a change, if only to have an early briefing of with the starting spot and some info.

Instead of as now being thrown into chaos without any hints...Ah well, chaos is probably self conflicted anyways :)

But "some" players can probably get used to talk about Medal play if they care to, or just leave it alone for us that really want some early strategies.

I doubt if we will ad this extra level of complexity and service in the short term.

The intent of the tournament games is not just to be a second GOTM game each month.

Besides, these final four GOTM style games are very involved and complex and they will represent enough opportunity for any normal human being to rise to the challenges of participating meaningfully in the pregame discussions as well as semicognitive participation in the spoiler discussion events.

I believe this is a misconception, in some cases at least. I for one did not want a simpler game just for the sake of being simpler, nor did I want a guaranteed win. When the base difficulty of the game is Emporer or Deity, (or "Demigod" or "Sid" for that matter) then the Conquest class is appealing. I was quite disappointed with the game where the choices were Open class on Emporer or Conquest class on Regent. What I really wanted was Monarch that game... :(

Anyway, here is my opinion of the ideal medal series.

  • Two games per month (doing good there...) :)
  • For some of the games, the option of playing a different difficulty level instead of with bonuses / handicaps. Doing good there :)
  • A mixture of highly specialized games, and more standard games, both with loving care and the expert touch of an accomplished game-master. Doing GREAT on this one :worship:
  • Well disciplined pre-game and spoiler discussions to enable players to learn from each other -- we're lacking in the mid-month medal games, but still overall it is working well :)
  • Timely and accurate scoring -- seem to be lagging a little on the timely part

So Cracker, if you're waiting for someone from the tournament thread to ask for the medal games to become more like normal GOTM games, here it is!

And if someone from the tournament wants to complain about pregame threads and optional QSC for the mid-month games, send them to me and I'll kick their .... oh wait, this is an e-world so kicking isn't possible... ;)

Er dude?

Its the 14th today and it explicitly states in the GOTM web pages that Medal games are released on the 15th of each month.

So hold your horses, go easy tiger, screw your courage to the sticking place, take a chill pill and revel in the non-discussion (that we asked for apparently  ) that builds the excitement for our next barely prepared installment in the GOTM Medal Play Series*

I've played civ 3 for a while. But once I started reading the pre-game discussions and spoilers of the GotM and Medal Play, I became better _and_ (the most important thing) found much more enjoyment out of the game.

Now I understand cracker and the crew don't have time to start up the pre-game discussions, that's fine. But I would love, and many newbies/strat hungry people, to have some pre-game discussions.

I would have thought that simply attaching an image of the start location to the first post in a thread would be OK. No need to develop a full blown announcement page.

Maybe I'm missing something.

As a CFC/GOTM newbie, my first two experiences are GOTM24 and Game 6-2.

My early take is that it's interesting to alternate between heavy pre-discussions and stepped qualified spoilers and then a game where you jump into alone and will compare notes much later.

Before joining CFC I had taken to playing Emperor with all-random options (even my civ is random) so I was very challenged and learned as I went. I usually prefer a challenge over an easy win. Even though I'm probably less experienced than many I'm playing Open Class for now and may try Predator Class when I get a coupe of wins under Open Class.
