I really enjoy the gotm's. They have improved my gameplay vastly over the last 6 months. However I am trying to finsh game 5-4 and have not even started this months gotm.
I have to work 6 days a week and being football season I am busy running my fantasy football league. I don't think I have time to finish the games anymore.

So, I am not quitting I will continue to download and try to play, but I just don't have the time right now.

I am really bummed about this:(

I really appreciate being able to play these games and all the time that is put in these games each month. I will not in the future be playing the tournament games. Just trying to play gotm's. I at least hope to get a few QSC's in, in the next few months.

Later( I might get laid off from my job too, so....)

Thanks to all the people who make this available:goodjob:

No problems, One.
You do not 'have' to play and submit every month: as you say, there is no quitting.
It's good if you play when you feel like, submit when you have time and share the experience with us when you have (a lot) more time to go through the spoilers... ;)

I am seconding OFW lack of time.

After being away in Germany and not being able to read/post often, I realized how much of a part of my life CFC has become. Being away from it was almost as big of an impact as being away from my wife and children. (Almost)

While I don't have much time to play civ, I really enjoy surfing the threads during breaks at lunch. Although I doubt I'll ever finish another GOTM on time (GOTM22 was finished with several all-nighters and made my wife very angry with me.) I will still finish the QSC's and will post what I'm allowed to.

I have found that SG's are a more manageable amount of time for me. Having to play 10 turns every 3 or 4 days leaves me enough time for my family and other activities I like to do. But I do miss out on the cool "game engineering" of the GOTMs.

Maybe OFW and I could start some SG's using past GOTM's. Maybe under the quick games area we could have some teams start the last months ruleset and play it out over the next 2-3 months. Then start another one. If it's possible to complete a GOTM SG in 3 months then you could concievable play every GOTM by having 3 SGs at a time. Or you could just play one GOTM SG and complete every third or fourth.

If others have interest in this concept or have better ideas (Cracker, I know you've thought about this) lets get them posted. I would love to play at least one of these, even if we couldn't submit it to the competition, it would be interesting to see how we fare. (Spoilers and premap knowledge not withstanding.)

This is actually one of the reasons we set up the quick games subforum, just to support players who may want to replay old GOTM games in some new and variant way.

After the game is closed for submissions, you may take any game and define your own game experience: Succession Game, Progression Game, Tag Team you name it.

I will even pull any of the base game files and make some minor adjustments to the game for you if you have a specific request that can be quickly implemented.

As an example, if you want to play Gotm21 from a different civs starting position we can spin that out fo you.

Or if you want to play the game on the same difficulty as original but give some of your enemies some extra settlers and more workers we can do that for you as well.

(We are also still working on the scoring utilities that will let you define and manage your own QSC type games or your own games that score progress using any parts of the QSC type scoring format that you might choose to focus on. With luck these will be available to your soon.)

I think my problem with the current Quick Game forum is that I don't check it ever. Would it be ok to start a thread in the GOTM forum that indicates when new games in the QG area start? (Like the SG registry.)

This Idea sounds kinda cool, at the moment though I am playing 2 sg's and that about taps my time out during this time of year.

Keep me posted ControlFreak, I like the Idea!

My initial formulation would be something like this:
The first of the month I post the announcement that we will be playing an SG with the GOTM that just closed. I would request players interested, giving priority to:
  1. Players that tried to play the game but failed to finish.
  2. Players that played and lost.
  3. Players that wanted to play but never got the chance.
  4. Players that played but were forced into a victory condition other than the target Medal Series goal they set out to acheive.
  5. Anyone else (assuming low interest level)
If there is enough interest in that GOTM-SG play would start with a randomly chosen (or selectively chosen) player doing the first 20 turns. After that, the team would play 10 turns apiece on a 24HR Got It, 72HR total to post it. (After all these players would be time constrained, normally.) The target victory condition would be the same as the Medal Series goal for that GOTM.

Using the same map, there will always be spoiler information so it wouldn't be a pure GOTM game. But never the less, it would be somewhat comparable to the GOTM results for that GOTM. We would beable to compare with the QSC, GOTM and Medal Series results immediately because by the time we're done, the results will have been posted. If the GOTM staff can provide a way for me to grab the QSC results when we reach 1000BC I would be happy to post the comparison (i.e where we would have placed) if not the indepth analysis normally provided by the QSC staff. The same thing goes for the final Jason score.

I will try to start this going every month, starting with the Arab Game (currently ongoing). Expect my post on October 1st. I will also start a registry thread in the GOTM forum to highlight the start of any quick games people start. Hopefully, it can be a sticky and provide a way, within the GOTM forum to stay up to date on the Quick Games forum.

GOTM Staff please let me know if there is a way you would prefer I handle this.

Watch for this in 14 days (13...12...11...):)

You stirred my interest briefly, until I checked your sig, confirmed that OFW also plays PTW, and realised that, like most SG opportunities, this will probably be closed to v. 1.29 players :(

AlanH@

I would be happy to run two parallel games, one for CivIII (Mac) and one for PTW. Obviously, I won't be playing in both but my plan is to start them every month regardless of whether I will be a player or not. If you can find enough interest in the CivIII version, then there will definitely be a game there for you. IIRC there are players like Tao and Karasu that play CivIII (or have macs) that sometimes don't complete their games. We'll see how the interest plays out next month.

EDIT: There might actually be people who submit in PTW and would like to try it again in CivIII to see the differences.

@CF, I like a lot your idea.
I have been wondering for some time of GOTM SGs, and it would be nice to see this happen somehow.

At present, my personal impression is that it wil not be easy for the staff to support this initiative. Let's try to keep it alive anyway, and see if something can be made out of it.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful right now. :)

I was just looking at the quick games forum and it seems pretty vacant in terms of recent activity. I too would really like to play some quick games since some months I am just too busy even for playing only the GOTM. I think it is a great idea to base the quick games on old games of the month maybe just changing the difficulty level either up or down. That way if you didnt have time to start or simply want to try it again you can. Perhaps the best way to get more people to play them would be to announce in the game of the month forum with a sticky linking to the thread in the quick games forum when a new GOTM-based quick game starts. This would kind of remind people and announce when the opportunity to play a new quick game comes up.

OFW & Ricardo,

You might try playing the GOTM QSC each month. It only takes 4-6 hours and will give you a good flavor for the game. This month is a perfect example of that. The new units are really great to have in the game, not to mention tech tree mods and new opponents. Also, when you do decide to return to GOTM, you'll only have a small download file before beginning to play.

I, too, find myself with little time to play Civ 3. I downloaded Game 5-4 the day it was released, and I still haven't finished it. :( I finally had to give up on it so I could start playing GOTM-24, which sounded really interesting.

Here's my thought, if Cracker has time for something like this. Let's have a Game of the Quarter for those of us whose lives are too busy for regular GOTMs. New games would start on Jan. 1, April 1 ( ), July 1, and October 1. Games would be due after three months.

Spoiler threads would be spaced further apart as well. This would allow us slowpokes to be able to keep up with the threads a little better. For instance, the day that I was finally able to install and start playing GOTM-24, the Middle Ages spoiler thread for that game was already active. So I am pretty far behind already.

So that's my idea. I would really like to be able to play and submit more games for ranking, but between working full time, going to school half time, paying attention to my wife once in a while . . . well, you get the picture.
