No Treasure for Pirates

The Pegleg Pirate ships keep shelling Mapaca with quite good effect. The first land skirmishes commence as well, the Portuguese losing a Musketman.

Message from Oliver Cromwell to King Louie: we could image that both our countries can enjoy the production & earnings of Cutthroat Island for a certain period like 10 months or one year, and then hand over the island to the other party for the next governance period. What do you think?

His Majesté, Louis, has recently been advised zat Portuguese troops are marching towards New Lyons. Zey haff ludicrously asked for 199 gold pieces per turn for 20 turns, plus 495 upfront, just for ze Tactiques Navales. Zis arrogance is likely to bring zese Portuguese people to an early demise and a most necessarily humbling fall. His Majesté would like to be assured by ozzer monarchs zat zere vill be no interference in zis situation trés horrible, and zat possible territorial acquisitions resulting from war reparations for ze foolishness of ze Portuguese attackers, who are already looking askance at His majesté's envoys, be not objected to.

T020, Sep. 1657:

At Cutthroat Island, the Queen Mary manages to kill another Undead Pirate. Admiral Lindsay hopes that his mission way down south will soon be accomplished.

England agrees that Portugal must be ruled by a megalomaniac madman: after provoking a war with the Peglegs and then with England, they now also insult and attack the French. Our friend in France can be assured that we have no objections to you punishing them as you see fit.

If France and England support Spain's claim on the unsetlled area North-East of Belize and Campeche, Spain in return will recognize all gains made against Portugal.

Following another barrage of the Pirate fleet, Mad Jack and his Buccaneers storm Mapaca, killing several musketmen and two coastal batteries at only small own losses. Mapaca and its rum supplies are now firmly in the hand of the Peglegs.

Sacrebleu! Ze port of Mapaca is now a harbour piratique! Zis must be corrected immediatement, ze pirates are nevair to be allowed such a hold on firm land, it's as bad as a lukewarm croissant and improperly brewed coffee!

Why are the French so enraged? If the agreement between Swashbucklers and us Peglegs is still acrtive (and I didn't hear anything to the contrary so far from my dear old friend Black Henry), then the Frogs have nothing to fear from the Peglegs. (As long as you don't force us to drink that brown dishwater that you call "coffee", yuck...)

Three Cheers, Mad Jack Rackham

Per'aps its because vous insist on calling us as if ve were batrachiannes. Ve are la France! Frogs is our food, not our citoyens!

Well, I guess you'll have to live with it... The ones wearing red are the Lobsters, and the funny speaking ones are the Frogs... (Having not yet made up our minds, though, how to call the stinking rich ones?!)

Off topic: I just realize, that I must have forgotten to send out the save to Eclipse. :( Will do it as soon as I get back tonight.

Stinking rich ones? We call zem les Espagnards, vhy?

Also, ze joke is zat we've been giving you our real eau du dishes instead of coffee. Ze first time was by accident and your Ambassadeur could not tell ze difference, so ve decided to save on costs when hosting 'im.

In a secret location the Swashbucklers gather for Drink and Dance, and more Drink. One Buccaneer says this is the best Rum he has ever had, Don't get used to it lad someone is trying to impress someone, he then turned away. A scuffle across the room and shouting, its hard to make out drunken babbling but we did here the name Martoe, Arrr that 'tis for sure.
Soon the men were thrown out the front window to continue if they may outside. After the confusion a small man I've never seen before told every table he passed "they were fighting over someone planning a Mutiny. A Mutiny?

It is trés recommendable zat ze pirates make up zeir minds once and for all.

We 'ave espied, from our forward base in Bayonne, zat ze Hollandais are very busy setting up an urban establishment in the zone of Bretagne. Zey will be dealt with inmediatement, and such encroachement on French suzerainty will be dealt with expeditiously by our fleets. Ze Dutch, alas, have forced us to do such a thing. And gain a free urban centre without ze effort of actually building and population, of coruse, which will be deducted as reparations de guerre, non?

Our admirals report zat bombardement of ze Pirates at Cutthroat Island has yielded some results, units are wounded and some of the so-called civilians (prostitutes, tavern-keepers, usurious moneylenders and zeir type) are now dead in ze confusion. Just ashore, our troops have encountered some Portuguese troops who might be attacking ze free population of Mapaca. France, protectrice of all ze free peoples, would of course rush to ze aid of zese unprotected poor pirates. Ze House of Bragança would, of course, pay up reparations in ze form of technologie, and/or peripheric urban centres, as well as reimburse His Majesté monetarily for 'is troubles.

T021, Oct.1657:
After some bombardment, the Queen Mary blasts away the last Undead Pirate in Cutthroat Island. A Musketeer then takes possession of Cutthroat Island, finding 68 gold in the chest. 34 of them are handed over to le admiral de French fleet.

We suggest that we take the first turn of government-ship over the island. Question: is it worth building any infrastructure there? Then we would keep it, until the wharf is finished (takes 17 turns with an engineer) and give it then in the custody of the French crown.

Near Lisbon the returning English Africa fleet runs into a couple Portuguese War Galleons and Royal Galleons. The commander decides to fire a few broadsides into them and then take flight before they can return the fire with their heavier guns. Fortunately the English ships are much faster than those fat Galleons!

Message from Mad Jack: "Thanks for the offer, buddy, but we are doing quite ok without any help. (And their ain't enough rum in these poor Portuguese settlements for more than one party, anyways...) But we might be open for such an agreement, when it goes against tougher foes, and come back to you then..."

Mad Jack and half of his crew deal with three approaching Portuguese Musketmen/Musketeers, while the other half attends to their wounds from the previous fights and enjoy the pleasures of Mapaca. All Portuguese attacks are rebuffed now, so we hope that all of us will be able to doze in the sunshine now for a while...

His Majesté would, instead of taking to an pesky condominium, prefer zat les Anglais coöperate and acknowledge zat, being owned by no internationally recognised state, ze city of Mapaca be acknowledged as res nullius and its inebriated current occupiers be removed from ze premises. Else, compensation in ze form of technologie and coin would be also enough.
A free hand in dealing vith ze illegitimate Portuguese occupiers of ze Orinoco basin and ze settlers from ze Low Countries is much desirable to the eyes of His Majesté Louis, as well, and on zis front particulaire he expects that progress be made. His newest favourite would find it most amusing and agreeable zat His Majesté's wishes be fulfilled, as well.
