Noble's Club

Hi everyone. I'm new here but I've been playing Civ off and on since Civ II came out. I'm not a very good player at the moment though. I'm playing a game now and trying to get used to SE, just as something new since I ususally cottage spam everything I can. I usually play on warlord though, so Noble's going to be a step up for me. I'll be looking for any tips you can provide once we get going!

Thanks for the great site!

BTW: Can anyone tell me where to find the unofficial 3.13 patch for BtS? I saw it here yesterday but can't seem to find it again.

Hello lordnor.

The point of these threads is to provide help to everone who is playing at or around noble, so if you feel ready for a step up then now is the perfect time to do so! I'm only prince level and I'm still trying to stop some of my bad habits from playing the lower levels to long. After just a few games at a new level you won't look back ;)

I hope so. I've definately already improved my game. My SE economy is going relatively well, especially since I'm using Montezuma who doesn't have any particular benefit for an SE. My wife also plays Civ from time to time and when she does play, we usually collaborate with a single leader. We played a few nights ago and I instantly recognized several bad decisions in her play that I would have made not too long ago. Of course, being my wife, I'm not too sure how to bring those up :)

I could never get my partner to play civ with me, she thinks its all a bit silly really.

I prefer to run an SE myself, although its probably more of a specialist heavy hybrid economy truth be told, I'm looking forward to this game bieng a archipalegeo type map as I'm not sure what type of economy to go for? Traderoutes and commerce via GreatLightHouse/Colossus or if our start allows it pyramids for running specialist off lots of little seafood heavy island cities.

I'm also really tempted for an oracle/stonehenge to generate a few early great priests for settling which will allow expanding to good number of cities before maintinance starts to hurt. Would mean skipping the GreatLightHouse tho.

Okay! I need to stop thinking about the start until its posted It'll start driving me crazy again :crazyeye:

Welcome aboard lordnor! Feel free to play some of the earlier games, as well as future ones. As someone noted, these games are designed to be played at any level from Warlord to Prince. Monarch is also an option, but due to the limitations of the World Builder files, its sort of "Monarch-Light", as the AIs dont get their proper bonus techs. Thats not a bad thing, it sort of gives us a level between Prince and Monarch.
. . .especially since I'm using Montezuma who doesn't have any particular benefit for an SE.
Actually, he has 2 traits that do help SEs, SPI for quick civic changes (Caste System, Nationhood, Rep, etc), and AGG which aids the SE economy style of warmongering and pillaging to fund their empire. Without cottages, the SE can get short on cash prety quickly, even with the slider at 0% science.

I do agree that Monty isnt exactly an "SE Star", and that other traits like PHI and IND are a bit stronger, but there is almost always a way to leverage most traits to benefit most economic systems. SPI is especially versatile, and really shines later in the game when Anarchies are longer, and more painful.

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm trying to feel out with this game. I know that it CAN be done, I'm just trying to figure out HOW it's done. Aggressive has been very helpful this time around as I've already wiped the floor with Mansa and Justinian is severley crippled. I suppose I should have gone for a Phi or Ind leader on my first try. But no guts, no glory, right?

I have to start learning more about specializing cities I think, I'm still in my old Civ II thinking - "Bulid alot of similar cities that all work the same way".

Go Hannibal. I've been looking forward to using him again. I haven't finished fred yet but I may end up skipping that one, it was my first prince game on BTS but I lost interest in it (the NHL playoffs have started and I've been watching too much hockey). :goodjob:

Now playoff hockey and Civ go together perfectly but the wife wants the computer left in the other room (with no TV) otherwise we'd become hermits and never leave that room.

I hear you Hoberg. Check out this great article http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=252717

You might hate me a little Simmon but I'm a Leaf fan (yes it's true), but since we are out of the playoffs I think I'm pulling for Montreal, Pitts is my second pick (both teams just play a fast entertaining hockey game).

Leaf, Pitts, Canadiens, Nordiques

Guys? What language are you guys speaking? and what tech do I need to research to unlock the understanding of this?

I guess us brits just ain't big hockey fans!

Groo, you just have to take over the world, create a few colonies (one will have to be placed somewhere where it snows 3-4 months of the year, more if you go up north and that gave you a lot of beaver pelts) and then in about a hundred years you too can speak hockey. :goodjob:

@ Hoberg and Lordnor: Welcome to both of you!

These series are great for learning, players from warlord to prince can really learn a lot with these games. Our home mapmaker R_Rolo is a king in his job, so fun is also guaranteed!

When I was learning Noble, I had this guide printed next to me. It really helped me to figure out what I should do with my cities. Sisiutil's guide for beginners: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165632 Much recommended!!

Yes, and your right, we should be linking the games from this thread. Next game is already up, Hannibal. Sorry about that.
