Noob Science Question

Real basic question I'm sure: Does increasing Science reduces the number of turns to get a tech? If not, what does? Thanks for the help,

Short answer is yes.
More food + more science = Faster techs

Yeah, cost of a given tech is a specific number of beakers (you can mouse-hover on the tech tree to see the beaker cost). More beakers per turn researching that tech means fewer turns to finish.
