I've played a couple games now but still a very fresh newbie. :D

Grigori, then Malakim to Mercurians, then stayed there for a while, still haven't dabbled much in magic, then now trying Khazad. (The dwarf people, if I spelled it wrong :p)

I was loving the feel but got massacred by Flauros's Calabim next door by turn 300-ish. They're score was already up to 1000 when I was around 600/700, along with his stupid friend the Elohim at 900ish.

I didn't beeline Iron Working because I wanted to develop some of my gold-building techs first like the path along Mathematics I think, Arete, founded RoK, got some Mage Guilds to plop down, worked on Bone Palace.

Sooo, any tips? Is it obvious that I should have focused on defense/offense? How the hell did he grow so fast? I was at 4 cities at abundant/full (1 was just started) at around that point. Too slow?

Not an expert on them, as i do not play them often, but if i do i usualy do rather well.

The dwarfens do like the meele line a lot, i think iron working should come before the ecconomy techs, pick up some copper and go axeman first though.
You should not overexpand early as it will emty your vaults and you will have more citys to defend, instead try to focus on building a few, very good citys with a lot of hammers, pick up Bambur and try to get the mines of gelsomething with arete, while getting more axeman, once you get iron weapons + champs you should start building up you army, you will whant the ecconomy techs to support your army and some siege equipment, the arcance line is of little interest as you can only get adepts, especaly if you get Bambur to cast enchanted blade, and should be posponed until you realy have the upper hand and only down to KotE and the techs needed for mana you might whant to hook up.

Can I say Welcome to the forums?
Exactly what settings and what leader are you playing? That helps a little bit.

Anyway, if you want to increase your gold income then you must have a reason for it. That reason is related to the costs and that your empire and army is growing. The Khazad don't need many cities early on but you should always have some unit production going on. Balance carefully your economic development with your military development; as your economy grows, don't forget to grow your army.

Well it's fairly simple:
Any time you see an apostrophe (') in a word it means that it's gluing two words together. So They're, we're and you're should be the easiest to remember correctly, all of them are attaching the word 'are' (ie: they are= they're). The word you wanted to use above was their, the possessive. There is used to indicate an object somewhere else.

Hope that helps.

Is this related to this thread?

The Strategy and Tactics subforum has a lengthy thread giving tips on most or all of the races.

Some Top Ten Khazad tips are on page 4 of the "Top Ten Tips" - there's probably more in the that thread too. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8484240&postcount=75

But, of course, without knowing specific opponents, the map type, starting location and nearby resources, one could easily follow all the tips and still get crushed.

But the tips are helpful, done by people who play that race a lot - I know I play the Ljosalfars and Svartalfars fanatically and I know the tips on those races are solid hints battle-tested on the Deity levels.

It's worth checking out, in short.

I can only say one of things that have been said before.
Don't go for Knowledge of Ether when playing dwarves!
And even if you have it, think twice before building Mage Guild. And do not ever build more than one of those.

:D

I've found that the Hippus mercenary horsemen are a good "beginner's race" -- train half a dozen Horsemen (they start the game with a palace that gives them access to horses:thumbsup:!) and have them roam the surroundings, picking off animals and barbarians and storming the odd Barbarian city (horsemen are frighteningly good against even archers, and take most early barb towns with without breaking a sweat). They'll be highly skilled veterans in no time, and should take down most early threats to you before they make it close to your early empire. You'll also need defensive units back home, of course (especially against those tough adversaries that come along ever so often), but you should fare far better than you do without a "horse patrol" keeping the wilderness peaceful.
