okay, I have started building the spaceship. The help menu says I have to move the parts into my capital and then they will ask if I want to build the spaceship. Unfortunately, I can't get them to go into the capital city. I can direct them to other cities just fine, but the closest I can get to the capital is the hex next to it. This is probably an easy thing to do but I just can figure it out. Any help is appreciated.

You probably have a land unit garrisoned in the capital. Spaceship parts are treated as land units (for instance, Forges speed production). Move your unit out of the capital and you should be fine to enter the capital with the part.

I had a similar problem with my first ship ...
I had built one part in the capital and was trying to move more parts onto it.

Took me some time to figure out that you have to select the part in the capital and click the "add to space ship" icon.

Does the spaceship launch right when the last peice is added or does it take 10 or so turns like in Civ IV?

yes and victory is immediate (no more 40 turns waiting for the ship to reach alpha centauri

It is not important that you actually colonize another planet. It is only important that you tried.

Well as much as I liked the suspense in civ1 (yes, 1, I have played only 1 and 5 ;), the wait time whether you'll be the first to land, it does make sense that the victory is instant. I mean - you launch the ship, it's on her own, doesn't matter much what happens on mother Earth. Since all the spaceships are supposed to have the same speed (no more building a 10,000 colonist ship with as much engines as possible), it makes sense that the first civ to build will eventually be the first to land .
