I have iron one tile from my capital with a mine on it. It was connected before as I made some longswordmen and stuff. Unfortunately I don't know when it decided I didn't have it anymore. I've checked all my active deals and my deal history and I've never traded the iron away.

Mouse over the iron icon at the top of the screen. It should tell you what's in use. You said you built longswordsmen, so you probably exhausted all of your supply of iron until those units die. One node won't provide infinite units like in previous games.
