When playing as the Ottomans, I built cities till I ran out of names, and when I founded another city it was autoname "Not Constantinople." I checked the editor and saw that the last Ottoman city name was Van, the city I built just before it. Has anyone else gotten your Ottoman city named "Not Constantinople?" I'm trying to prove that my brother is wrong.

Speculation is that it stems from a song by "They Might Be Giants" which goes:

Istanbul was constantinople
now its istanbul not constantinople.

Yeah, that's why I thought it was funny. I LOVE that song.

It's actually not by They Might Be Giants. It's by a bunch of old dudes and They Might Be Giants did a remake of it.

I started this thread because I showed my brother (a semi-fanatic) the "Not Constantinople" city, he didn't believe me and thought I just typed that, so I'm trying to prove him wrong. Just tell me if you've seen that, in the most straight-forward language you can.

Yes, i saw it.

I seen it too, and me, not really knowing/caring about it, thought it was really an Ottoman city named Not Constantinople.
anyway, they joke was gay.

Alpha Infantry, you should watch what you say in a post. One, you could offend someone who is gay. Two, you could offend someone who has a gay friend (ie: me) or family member (ie: me again). If you are going to say something like that how about saying it is lame and not using something that is completely normal and turning it into something you feel is wrong? Oh, and it should have read, "Anyway, THE joke was ***." Thanks.

if he had said the joke was dumb would you get offended if you knew someone in your life that was dumb?

saying the joke is gay isnt saying the joke is homosexual, its just another way of saying corny, i suppose.

or do jokes now have sexual preferences? words only have the meaning and power you give them.

You see, the difference is that when you call a joke dumb, you are actually saying that the joke is dumb, or for dumb people.

When you say that a joke is gay and mean that it's corny, you're implying that gay people are corny... (not sure how that works... :hmm:)

Anyway, if words only have the power and meaning that you give them, I can just call you a mother-****er and your mom a ***** and it wouldn't be offensive because it was you that interpreted it to be an insult.

I too have a much loved family member who is gay, so it makes me feel sad to see anything that equates gay with dumb or wrong. :(

Time was when "gentleman" meant that you owned land and "goodwife" did not describe a person's abilities. Words have meaning and the context sometimes is necessary to determine which meaning. For those of us of a certain age, we sometimes use gay to mean without cares or maybe even, happy.

Isn't "happy" one of the definitions of the word gay in all dictionaries, anyway? I don't see why it could not be used in that sense, since we've got many other words that change meaning depending on the context anyway (like "cool").

Anyway, I had never realised there were these easter eggs in Civ... I have to keep my eyes open...

thats the intent of an insult, to make the other person take offense. of course me knowing that words are harmless, i fail to get offended by them.

asterisks or letters, the intent is the same, how YOU take it is your not THEIR problem.

i could claim whatever you type offends me and hurts my feelings deeply and ask you stop posting period, after all its the same line of reasoning you're using.

perhaps taking it up with someone on staff and letting THEM handle it might be a better course of action next time???

mountains should never be made out of molehills.

I was just defending Vegasgustan after it was brought up.

So I could call you a ***** like "Oh, I remember those *****es that told me about the corruption formula", and you knew I was specifically referring to you, you wouldn't be the slightest bit irritated?

I really don't have anything to add.

Perhaps a Moderator should close this post.

I will say thank you to Tomoyo and Gmaharriet for the kind words.
