Not exactly sure if it's a bug or anything, but...

I hear all these stories about "great crossings" of the ocean between continents at times when the boats might sink in the water. However, it never lets me even go into the sea or ocean with a galley or whatever. I see these stories where they do it but it doesn't let me do it at all, it won't even let my units move there. Is it supposed to be like this or what...?

Depends on how you're doing it. If you try to use the 'go-to' feature, it won't work, because the path isn't safe. However, if you go as close as you safely can, then move one square at a time either with the mouse or keypad, you can use the suicide galley bit.

If you get the Great Lighthouse, you can move in sea as well withoput sinking.
