I am well aware that my question is most likely a simple one, but as the title suggests, my computer knowledge is limited. Must I save the file download and will the changes take place immediately without any hassle on my part?

If you do it via the game interface, it will sort itself out - just follow on screen instructions.

If you download it from the firaxis (or is it take2?) web site, then you need to double-click on it and it will then self-install.

Well, I attempted to download the patch but encountered a potential problem. The window will open and begin downloading and after a few minutes state that it is complete. Nothing happens. Is this because of my 56k dial-up?

Highly likely - can happen if the site you are downloading from is busy. Only thing to do is try another site (or wait a while and use the same one again). Its a biiiiig patch - 44Mb - and on dialup thats gotta hurt .... If you know someone with a broadband/cable link get them to download it and give it to you on CD. There's lots that can give you grief on a dial-up download, and its not fun to see it go bang in the last few Mb's of the download

Alternate mirror sites are shown on the home Page - scroll down a few turns and you will see the notice announcing the V1.52 patch. Alternatively, do it through the game interface, in the starting game menu - but its going to take hours on 56K, need lots of coffee ..... or leave it overnight

Game interface downloads can be funny beasts at times ....

If still like that tomorrow - you will need to download from a mirror, or preferably get a mate to download (maybe at work ??)

A real looooong shot - depending when you bought it, its possible I suppose that you have a new print run including the 1.52 patch, but it's a bit early for that as it was only released 24 Dec

EDIT: If you get hassles getting this, PM me, I have the patch on a site, I will send you a link to download it.

Not to seem ungrateful, your help is much appreciated, but the file download from the official website is 45.5 MB. The link you have provided is slightly less (44.8 MB). Is there a reason for the difference in file size?

Interesting - should not be in theory - but clearly you must go with the official download if doubts.

Thanks for that - I will have a ferret in case someone else needs it. That one seemed to work for me, but .... life is weird sometimes

Perhaps I may be mistaken? I checked the other mirror sites and discovered that the file size is 44.8 or 44.87. I also found that saving the file from 2K Games would result in a long, but secure download. Before I obtained this information, last night I downloaded your file. Needless to say it improved the game immensely. I was actually able to see the opening cinematic! Although, the screen would continuously split horizontally in two and one half would become dark. I just hope that all the files contain the same amount of content.
