What does the Luxury slider on the Dom Advisor page do? That's the thing with the smiley, right?

It makes people happy. One gold = one happy person.

Advanced players prefer using the luxuries slider to creating clowns in each city.

Well up to a point. I think that when you get this very large empire and have a city with more than 7 pop and it need a joker, I would rather give it a joker than raise the slider.

That city is not giving much due to corruption and my main ciies are not needing more happiness, so why drain off their money? That size 12 corrupt city yields 1 or 2 shields and 1 gold, so as long as it can still feed itself, use an entertainer. Just my .02

What vmxa says is true. There are different situations which warrant different actions.

As a general rule of thumb: If lots of cities are unhappy, raise the lux slider. If only a few cities are unhappy then hire specialists.

The only exception is in the early turns, where you should look to use the lux slider first as much as you can. You cannot afford to stop working food tiles until after the expansion phase.

It makes people happy. Use this in situations where you can't afford to convert your citizens to entertainers, ie in situations where production is key. I never used it until I tried for the 20K culture victory.

One thing to keep in mind however, the higher your luxury slider the slower your tech research (duh). I found that where the tech race is key, I'll use entertainers instead of the luxury slider. Where production is key, and I've got the GL, then I'm more apt to use the luxury slider.
