Now my game won't work at all

I had CivIV 1.61 working. I wanted to try playing a GOTM. I tried to install HOF1.74 but it wouldn't install. I started thinking maybe the problem was that I had installed the Blue Marble graphics and maybe I couldn't play GOTM with that. I uninstalled CivIV from the Control Panel because I couldn't find anywhere else to uninstall and did bring up a CivIV unistall shield. I installed the game again. Tried to install 1.74Patch which wouldn't install until after I installed 1.61 Patch. Then I installed HOF1.74. The game wouldn't start b/c there was a dll missing. Found the dll online. Got past that. Now the game won't play because there's a problem loading shader libraries. I don't even know what a shader library is. I'm wishing now that I had never messed with trying to alter the game which worked fine before. I just want the game to work. Being able to play GOTM would be really nice, but I just want the game to work. Please somebody tell me how do I fix it?

I don't have an answer, but a few questions that might help someone who does ...

Do you have warlords or BtS installed as well, or just vanilla?

Are you running Vista or XP?

I suggest when something is missing (like it appears to be in this case) to do a complete reinstall.

I'm not an expert on these matters though, so someone else should be able to be more helpful than me.

It sounds as if a complete clean install is the only way to resolve your problems. Here is my suggestion:

Do the Control Panel->Add/remove programs thing for all of your Civ4 software, then clean out anything that's left in the \Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civ4\ folder, in case that left some rubbish behind. Make sure you also clear the Mods and Custom Assets folders in your \My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\ folder.

Then reinstall Civ4 1.61 and update it to 1.74. Try to get it working as a standard installation first, then you create a copy of the installed software to try to create a GOTM-compatible installation, using the updated DLL and the HoF Mod. That way, if you screw it up, you can always get back to the clean, working version.

Thank you! When I looked back I couldn't find this post and so I asked again in the Help forum. I've got it fixed now.

I had the same exact issue... missing DLL file that I found and installed then shader error. I tried to uninstall from Control Panel but can not! I can't do a clean install because the system says uninstall first. I am peeved at the Firaxis site for recommending the 1.74 patch as now I am dead in the water!

I am on XP and have Vanilla Civ IV.
Thanks!

here is the thread that lilyPadma found the solution to her problem in...perhaps it will help you as well.

If you choose to play the GOTM(or HOF) after you get it fixed, then you'll need to install 1.74 again(assuming this fix doesn't give you an accurate 1.74 install). If you do, I recommend downloading it from Gamespot.com, rather than from the in-game patcher.

Thanks everyone! Actually, on another thread I found that I was able to solve the issue by downloading the latest version of DirectX 10.0 from Microsoft! Sure enough it solved the problem and Patch 1.74 is working!!! Who new Microsoft would have caused the error!?!? But then again, they fixed it! :) Thanks again!
