Nubian Religion

Even on difficulties as low as Emperor you won't have much of a chance unless you go straight for it, so open with Astrology and cross your fingers, imo. Some of the beliefs and worship buildings are potentially useful (Jesuit Edu, Papal Primacy, Meeting Houses and Wats) but none are needed, and a pantheon is plenty for a non RV game.

Most early religion strategies I can think of is about getting several holy sites early in the game which mean:
  • Getting astrology relativly early
  • Getting several cities early
  • Likely getting mining early so you can chop forests
For religious game you pretty much want a holy site in every city because faith is the key but you can also use military to capture enemy cities with holy districts to reduce their ability to recruit religious agents. A holy site with a shrine and a temple can generate 10 faith per turn without any adjacency bonus. Later you may have for example synagogues, the +100% faith from building card and 3 specialist working each holy site. In such case you should be able to produce 28 faith per turn per site without any adjacency bonus.

To get a great prophet you can either build several holy sities + shrines or you can use holy prayers project alot. Holy prayers is an easy way to guarantee a prophet without need to rush several holy sities but it wont help with your long term faith generation. As Nubia you have an improvement that generate faith which I think is best used in addition to holy sities. Like do this, chop out holy sities, purchase religious buildings and work pyramids and you should have very good faith generation. Culture is also an important resource for religious gameplay as you want to get reformation as early as possible which can be done by for example beelining to theatre squares and chop one out in every city or build it in those cities that can't get them by chopping.

What techs in order would you suggest in trying for early religion. Given the unique improvement not sure what order would be best

Unfortunately, as with most religious improvements, you really don't even want to start building them until you're well into late game, and all your holy site have been completely built up. Even in religious games food and production are just far better than faith early on.

For deity, in general you want to rush to astrology ASAP, get your shrine up ASAP and churn out holy prayers 3-4 times. You should still build 1 or 2 slingers to simply not die to early rushes. Normally I think slinger/builder/holy site while teching to astrology is a build you can get away with. Unlike other victory types, keep your warrior slightly nearby since your defense is a bit weaker than just a straight tech to archer with 2-3 slingers made. But if need be, switch to slinger production and archer tech. Its still possible to get a religion even after archer tech, but there's a chance you'll fail and usually it will require more prayers which will significantly slow you down. Buts its better than just dying.

Playing emperor level, I've found it easy to get a religion. Just immediately start teching astronomy and build a holy site asap. Then build a shrine which I found more efficient than prayers. You just need one holy site and you will get to pick religion most of the times second, depending if you have a productive capital. Managed to get first pick too if I were lucky to get an early envoy at a religious CS or run into a relic so I can get desert folklore to rush buy the great prophet. Even if you would miss out on your religion, with Nubia I would say building HS in desert cities is worth it if you can get a religion with Feed the world spread out in those cities.

Depends on the difficulty, on Diety it will always be a dice roll depending on your start and your neighbors. Last religious game I tried I ended up next to Sumeria and war carts showed up around my border at turn 13 or so as I was trying to get a builder out lol. You aren't getting a religion there.
