My mate said he read somewhere that in Civ III there was going to be a new Wonder called "star wars" that gave every city an SDI improvement. This sounds like quite a nice idea but I have not read anything about this, is he bullsh*ting me?

Anyone confirm this?

I can neither confirm nor deny that, but if it's anything to you, I in my personal opinion don't think this is true. Most of all because all of the Wonders in Civ 2 have been "realistic" ( as to that they actually have EXISTED, despite hardly providing the services they do in the game ), which "Star Wars" would not.

Can't tell you for sure though...

Well in all honesty the SDI in Civ II is already unrealistic and is meant to be the Star Wars program I thought.

I think the Star Wars wonder would be okay, it would be a good way of protecting all your cities, but might provoke an arms race, with your opponents trying to nuke you before you built it or something.

Also I think the SDi should only have an 80% chance of stopping Nukes, therefore if you built enough you could destroy a city 9 needed to maybe get through the SDI therefore.

There will be a small wonder (these are new to civ 3 and can be constructed by anyone, even if it has allredy been built) called the Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI) in civ 3. I think it is different to the SDI in civ 2 in that in Civ 2 it is a city improvement, in civ 3, I think once you build the SDI small wonder, all your cities are protected by it.

I hope it stays a city improvement. If it's a wonder, you only have to build it once, and all your cities are protected. (And if its not one of the new mini-wonders, only one country can build it.) Now, you have to build them in most of your cities (ones more than 3 apart). I think now it costs a lot more, which I think more accurately reflects the recources that would go into creating SDI.

Given the protective power SDI provides (and the obvious technical difficulty in construction) I'd think a minor wonder should first be built, with this allowing construction of SDI improvements in each city. As big_time_charlie suggested, it would also be more interesting if an SDI were not foolproof .... perhaps an 85 or 90% interception rate.
