Nukes are not good. The polution the pain the suffering, etc.

I have yet to launch a nuclear strike in my 3+ years of playing!! Except maybe for my first game. I'll look at the save game to check.

Anyways...

Anything a nuke can do is done better with 3 bombers, 3 cruise missiles, and 3 paratroopers. Admittedly this option is more expensive but it prevents the need for...

3 engineers, and SDI for all your cities.

If you never build Manhattan and kill off any civ that dares do so, then your okay.

Then again on Emperor/Diety (I'm still King phasing to Emperor) I can see the need to simply nuke, it's easier.

What do you mean by figure largely? Do I build them, yes. Do I use them, no. Nukes are good for a deterrent and if you need to quickly take out another civs capital.

I hate it when you're allied with a civ (in my case it was the Spanish), and they ally with you until they have no more use for your techs, etc. They also launched a spaceship, which they couldn't have done without MY techs in the first place, so I used a Fundamentalist government to plant a nuke. It went undetected. :) 'Mysterious nuclear explosion'. So I sent in a Mech. Inf and they split into 2 civs, and the Spanish were too busy dealing with the rebels (Greeks).

Nukes are there, and there to stay. I always have them, even in my normally rather peacefully inclined games. One must always be at equal strength with the other nations, no matter if you plan to move against them or not. I keep a few missiles lying around, and if I notice my opponent gathering them by the numbers I will also turn to stockpiling missiles and having them in locations ( cities and airbases ) ready to be launched at my perceived enemy. Quite frankly I love the little "Cold War" situations that so often occur for me.

Though admittedly I rarely come around to using them. :nuke: I will very seldom launch a missile first, but it has happened. More often than not the only time I launch my missiles is in desperate self-defence or retaliatory strikes on my enemy. An eye for an eye, as it were. :nuke:

I voted yes.
Although I never ever build nukes, they figure heavily in my late game military strategy because I am required to consider where to put my SDIs because the AI is never slow to use nukes whenever they have the chance. I used to love watching the swift advance of my tanks annihilate any of the other civs pathetic resistance, but mellowed quite a while ago. Now I will only get angry if I am stupid enough to leave a city unguarded by SDI and another civ nukes me, but I never retaliate in kind. I like tanks so much more. I have never experienced this situation with the AI, but the only time I'd be tempted to use nukes on them would be if one of their cities was built on a tiny one or two square island. The fact that nukes over the sea don't cause pollution is wonderful for those under naval attack. I've never seen the AI with a city on such a tiny island, but have built them there myself when I've been unable to resist the mix of whales and fish specials. With a harbour, then these cities can become vital points for naval assaults.

It really depends. But in most games I won't use nuclear weapons. Though sometimes in Scenario's like WWII I might use a nuke to take one of my enemies major cities.

When I'm pissed off, I start pumping out nukes like mad and destroy the world. By that time, the welfare of my cities is no longer a factor so pollution can be more or less ignored.

:tank: I find it is a lot easier just to use Armor, less messy and reusable
:)
anyway i just dont like pollution, i am sort of a neat freak

75% of my games im not first one to get nukes. I go for the laser and pollution cleaner upers :) I always have my Tanks and marines-but i never go for nukes to fast--i always go for the things that off-set the most valuable things in the games.
:nuke: cant hurt u if you have the laser, bombers cant hurt you if you have sam sites.
But when i do use nukes i try to always use a spy to see if that city has the SDI defense-if so i use it or more than 1 to try to knock it out :) then that city is toast
SINISTER

nukes are part of the game-but always use them wisely-to many may cause global problems

Yeah, but tanks, spies and howies can always damage you.
The spy nuclear bomb is something I've never personally used, but since my reputation means nothing to me then I don't see why I shouldn't. What are the pollution effects of doing this?

The pollution effects of planting nuclear devices are the same of attacking with nuclear missiles!!

I've only used nukes once. It was in a Diety game and I was behind in the spaceship race so I nuked cites that didn't have SDI (checked with spies) then para-dropped in had spies plant nuke devices and took over cites until the space ship returned. The chart at the end of the game was spectacular with almost 90` lines for the civs I did that to.:sniper:

Nowadays, I don't nuke. But if nukes can be built, I'll have one... or at least the veteran spies in same-turn striking distance.

What I call the 'Israeli Gambit' is if I'm nuked, or losing, or going to be overrun... the AI is going to live a nuclear nightmare, and the mess can be cleaned up later. ;)

In my last game that I won I had such a terrible reputation that using nukes would have probably improved my reputation...

Didn't get to use them though because I hadn't even researhed Atomic theory (my research was very rubbish). The game finished in 1915 r something like that and that was my first game oon Prince. I'm going up in the world :)

I try not to...I"m never the first to use it but when the first explode I have always 10 nuke standing by...I never build Manhattan project and after robotics I go straight to Laser(SDI)

i use nukes in emergency

an effective strategy is hit em with cruise missles and helicopters
then take over

I was playing and i was at war with the zulu's... In one turn they started a nuclear war by nuking 3 of my city's!!! Well... I can only say one thing! REVENGE!!! :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

I never use nukes. Heck, I've never built one! I do build the Manhattan Project just to boost my score. I usually wait and wait to see if someone will build it, and if not, I'll go ahead and do it. So far, I've never been nuked.

I rarly use nukes. But sometimes they are a necessity. The one time I was forced to use them in the harshest way, was when I didn't even have missles or rockets. I boated 32 spies and 24 engineers over to the Egypians (They were killing me!!!) Using spies to carry the bombs and engineers ro clean up pollution and to rebuild roads and railroads, I took out Nine cities(That's all they had!!) in one turn. Kind of rough on the spies, but very effective in slowing down the Egyptians and getting me back into the game research-wise. I gained 14 researces and 9 cities and 5 WONDERS, all for the cost of a lot of spies and general disapproval from the other civs. It more than doubled my number of cities. It was worth it.:slay:

Oooo that is the ultimate suicide technique if it doesn't work...:crazyeyes I like the way you didn't use any military units at all, that is just so funny. I have done the research thing before when I attacked the French because I was miles behind but I have never gone on a nuke run.
