Nuke the spaceport?

I know this is just speculation but in one of the videos they show a spaceport district constructing a ship that launches and triggers a cut scene. Assuming this is the science victory it seems really easy to stop now that everything is outside the city center.

Civ V had a bunker that protected you somewhat from nukes but if the spaceship is out in the open it seems too easy to just nuke the spaceport tile. Maybe you can still build a bunker but would that protect all of the tiles around your city?

Any thoughts?

Or you can raze it with a conventional bomber too.

If you play multiplayer with your best friend, you should agree not to do this, if you want to preserve your friendship intact.

That is why the Cold War was a big deal; Absolutely everything (including life itself) can be stopped far too easily with nukes! :nuke::eek::nuke:

So in terms of realism nukes ought to be OP and easily destroy other victory paths. What is difficult to balance are all of the negative environmental and political factors that go along with nuclear war. Since they've already confirmed that there are justified wars and surprise wars, there also ought to be some MAJOR diplomatic penalties and other repercussions for using nukes in any kind of war.

If it is a science victory, it seems way too easy to destroy, even if you have all your military around the tiles to protect the spaceport. One nuke and essentially you're done for. Maybe have AA on the spaceport that would prevent a nuke from taking it out (think Reagan-esque 'Star Wars' program).

We also have to remember we don't know the details yet, and even if it is, the game is in a state that it can still be tweaked easily :crazyeye:

If you are in the late game and your opponent is about to win you likely don't care about diplomatic penalties. Also as mentioned, it doesn't even need to be nukes. Bombers might do the trick as well.

In civ v you had to capture the city or destroy it with nukes to stop the space race and you at least had a chance to defend your city long enough to finish the ship especially if you could buy parts with gold. This seems much harder to defend.

There must be some way to counter nukes, like some missile shield system. For bombers and nuclear bombers, the answer probably is the classic interceptor/anti-aircraft gun combination.

True friendships survive the nukes. While there might be fists flying but by the end of the day with sun setting, we'll be like bros again.

A retaliatory nuke could cause extreme population happiness. So if you use a nuke to stop someone's victory and they retaliate with a nuke, your entire population goes into revolt. That way you are truly only using it for emergencies.

Didn't someone say something about James Bond-esque missions for spys in Civ VI?

maybe there is a spy mission to destroy an enemy space port?
If this came with a video with explosions all over the place, guys in orange overalls falling over ledges into vats of liquid nitrogen and a voice-over by Sean Connery or Daniel Craig (even Brosnan would do tbh), I'd be one happy ruler!:goodjob:

EDIT: I wouldn't mind suitcase nukes making a comeback (we've only had them in Civ II), if they were balanced at least semi-decently (in Civ II they were a world-ending device, if you could bother with the micromanagement). Also, perhaps nukes will be balanced by a limited range (I'm not sure if Civ V nukes had unlimited range, since it's been so long since I played the game until the modern era). So if you can keep the surrounding seas clear of submarines xx tiles away, you can be assured of your spaceport's safety (unless you get jamesbonded... Hopefully ;)).

Maybe there will be something like SDI to prevent it Some Civ games did?

I do think there needs some counter to nukes unlike in civ five where there was practically nothing. But at the same time. The SDI initiative was wayyyyy too strong in civ four. It practically made nukes useless.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a nuclear silo district. Perhaps spies could disable silos as well?

Well there is only one district remaining,
nuclear silo would be a good option (a sort of domination victory parallel)
I could also see a diplo district (you earn envoys outside of CS through influence...it has to come from somewhere)

I would imagine Nuclear silos would be build-able installations within military district.

Remember district can only hold limited number of buildings. Giving Silos as its own districts actually makes it easier to build them.

I also suspect SDI is back, in-line with Ed's recent comments about new things unfolding with each new age.

If Silos are a district it would be fun to have them as secret undergoud districts hidden under a farm tile. With the fields opening to let the missiles pass.
Given that Ed said that there is some james bond-like mechanics, it's not so improbable.
