i've been playing Civ III for quite some time now, and i would like to become a better player, but i seem to be trapped in my old ways i picked up in Cheiften

as i am now determined to move up to Warlord/Regent, i can never decide which is better:
play a game with lots of opponents
play a game with fewer opponents

lots of opponents, i always get crowded out for space, but fewer opponents i can never trade for techs, and fall behind in the tech race

PS-side question, when you're not building units, should i build very many buildings in my cities, or not? is just setting the city to wealth a bad thing in the early ages? just thought i'd ask while i ask this question

I always recommend playing on std maps with the default number of players. Once you got that handled you can either move or change the settings.

At Warlord or Regent you can get by with little other than settlers and workers and a few warriors until you grabbed lots of land.

Yeah, you can usually get by with placing a few units in the cities that border other civs and leaving the rest undefended. I wouldn't recommend leaving them all undefended.

Well, I'd recommend (if you can stand my language, behavior etc.)

Succession game Myth01- Training Day- Regent
It is played in regent level, succession game is played 10 turns a time, after that you post turnlog and save and next player plays. tho we are in 310 AD already, alot of learning (with how to handle cities and build them) can still be made. Don't be afraid of doing mistakes, anyone who can will help to improve and suggest things.

More advanced players can help you and analyze your moves, think out strategy and you self can offer ideas, or ask questions freely, learning things etc. Thing is that you only play 10 turns in one time and then pass save onwards forces you to think and micromanage, unlike normal games where you can just push enter whenever you want.

Succession games , esp training games, can be slow (maybe you have to wait week before next your turn is).

It also sounds you have problem with REX (rapid expansion phase)
Civilization III: Introductory Courses

What are my mistakes (Northen Wolf question thread)

This was my thread when I first joined Civilization Fanatics, some of greatest players gave me advice, (vmxa, Aabraxan for few examples) some things might be answered there (was warlord player back then, now in between regent/monarch).

It is safe to leave cities in core undefended(if no fast moving unit can reach them), I presonally prefer 3 fast moving units (horsemen, cavalry/tanks) in middle of empire, so they could move in any town where they might be needed.

And I prefer more civilizations, with few civilizations you can improve your science self learning skills.
