Currently, the maximum number of religions in a game is equal to the number of starting civs. So on a Standard map with 7 civs there can be 7 religions. The 'Fewer Religions' option reduces this maximum to 2/3 (rounded up) of the starting civs - a Standard map would have just 4 religions under this setting.

Since the Fewer Religions option seems to be very popular (understandable, given the diplomatic influence of religions) I'm debating making 2:3 it the default ratio and have the Fewer Religions option reduce the ratio to 1:2 - half as many religions as civilizations.

Please indicate your preference in this poll. Note that due to insurmountable technical restrictions I cannot add more than 2 settings. I could however, modify the number of religions for each by some additional factor. Nothing strikes me as appropriate but let me know if you think of something.

Something occurred to me regarding games that use a custom DLL to allow more than 18 civs. Currently a game with 24 civs will have 18 religions in it (as that's all there are) and with fewer religions selected it will have 16.

However I could easily implement a cap so that any game with more than 18 civs will have the same number of religions that a game with just 18 civs would have. So, under the current 1:1 settings a game with 24 civs would still have 18 religions by default, but with fewer religions chosen it will only have 12.

wanderm, let me know if that sounds desirable and, if so, whether it alters your preferred ratios.

Yes! That is the way to go. 12 was the magic number for my singular preferences, and doesn't affect the status quo globally.
