Où sont mes vins?

Yep, after we get writing, monarchy will be the next target, even if it takes 30something turns.

I played 17 turns to bring us down to an even 540 remaining.

Louis had an eventful few years. As Savant pointed out, he's not yet a real king so as per the variant rules, he insisted that we abandon researching alphabet and learn how to become a proper monarchy instead. It's slow going finalizing all the pageantry and getting him measured up for his robes and crown, but hopefully we'll get there before too long.

He also made some new friends:

Although he hasn't decided yet if either of those ladies is fit to be his Austrian princess.

In the meantime, the city of Aubagne was founded to act as a centre of military training for the Légion Étrangère. It started immediately on a barracks in readiness to take over the burden of military production from France's more affluent cities.

The city of Lyons was also founded to shore up the Western Front from Les Anglais, allowing France to expand northwards and eastwards at leisure from now on.

==========

Random notes: Those two new cities have dropped our research rate to 60%, so we could probably do with another worker or two and a couple of cottages before settling next to the gems (although that site would pay for itself almost instantly). Orleans is currently building an axe to defend Lyons. It's been running an engineer specialist to slow growth, but will grow into unhappiness next turn (which will wear off as soon as the gold is hooked up to the trade network). Paris is set to build a forge, mainly because I wasn't sure what to build there at the moment. There aren't any hammers invested yet though, so it can be changed without any loss. I've stuck signs labelled x, y and z on the southern end of the peninsula. They look to me like the best way to make use of that land (lighthouses and cottages will bring in a decent amount of commerce there), but aren't worth going for until we've got the jungle to the north east developed (on reflection, I'd missed the fish to the SW so z should definitely be moved - x and y look OK though).

And finally, the save. Bon chance Savant!

Okay, looking good.

Savant, try to get as many cottages running as you can. Our economy definetly needs improving. Play 15-20 turns as you see fit.

I will be hors de combat until Mon evening. Feel free to skip me if I haven't checked back in

OK folks, got the save, sorry for not answering earlier.

I'll play it tomorrow, expect report within 24 hours. I'll go cottage heavy, and maybe start a settler for the gems spot.

Okay, I decided to play 20 turns as not much happened in the game.

Pre turns : I decided to let Paris build its Forge, always good to have w. gold on hand anyways. I reset it on max growth (just working farm instead of lake) since it was growing slowly.
The warrior guarding the isthmus feels thirsty, and wanders northwards to see if the greeks are concealing our precious wines.

T2:
Louis finds that the land north of his capitol by no means look like anything like his usual Jardins à la Française, he decides he needs more gardeners. Orleans axe -> worker
There is some random barb activity in the south

T3:
Our chariot barbecues the warrior in the south

T5:
Lyons Borders pop, the gold is finally connected.
With horrid stupor we notice Alex has dared settling on our doorstep. He shalt be punished someday for this outrage à majesté.

T6:
Vicky turns hinduist

T7:
Alex dares asking for open Borders with mighty France. As we are not connected with him in any ways and don't want our peninsula settled by him or anyone, I reject.
Paris borders pop, stone in reach.
Our woodsman II warrior explores the territory north of MM.

T8:
Paris forge -> granary

T9:
Orleans worker -> granary
The worker goes cottaging Lyons

T12:
Pyramids BIDL

T13:
Hatty irksomely adopts a rigteful and just governement form, even before us !! (didn't know the AI would go for HR with pyramids...?)

T15:
Granary whipped in Paris on last turn for overflow

T16:
Paris granary -> Library, since our research sucks, despite the gold mine.
Orleans whipped granary, for overflow -> fishing boat

T17:
MONARCHY FINALLY RESEARCHED!!!
Now Louis is happy. He rejoices so much that he decides to throw a 1-turn long party to celebrate this.

T18:
Orleans workboat -> axe
A bit hungover, Louis realizes he still isn't king yet :mischief:. He fires all his drunken tribal counselors and gets crowned

T19:
:king:
Say goodbye to our lil exploring warrior :

The engineer in Orleans is fired for faster growth. Feel free to reset him onto work if popping a GE is the way to go.

Future recommandations :

Gold + forges + HR vatly iproved the happiness caps, so I'd advise to grow our cities ASAP & build some more military

Civ4ScreenShot0005-2.jpg

(yea we suck).

Aubagne's Rax will soon be online, a settler can be built next in Paris for the gems spot, or just wait until the city hits size 6. We should heavilly cottage our 2 isthmus cities.

A question about open borders with anyone : shall we or not? ATM no one is connected to trade network. But later on...

Enjoy :D

Ok, I guess that makes me up.

Let's see if there's something to discuss after your report.

Now, it seems that there isn't much to wonder about. Louis has been crowned and the future shall be glorious, and hopefully grape-rich.

Will play&post tomorrow.

Hail King Louis XIV! :D

Just so you know, the Engineer in Orleans was hired to slow growth in a vaguely useful way as it was about to grow into unhappiness. We definitely don't need him now, but he's worth recruiting again in the future once that city's grown sufficiently.

To keep our variant rules in order:
If we can generate a GE from Orleans at some point, it'll allow us to build Versailles anywhere, which could well be worth considering (with stone and iron available, Paris has the oomph to get us Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower).

We'll probably get a Great Prophet from the Oracle before too long. It might be worth trading for religious techs so we can use him to lightbulb theology while we're racing to music, then use the artist from music to lightbulb as much of divine right as possible (if we go the quick way to music via literature we may have to put him to sleep while we research drama first, but with monarchy already in I think DR would be the next tech).

These years were uneventful enough to make His Majesty yawn but his trusted advisors should know these things nevertheless.

In land management, farming and cottaging continue to be the trend of the day.
However, one must be careful to not get carried away. It caused a certain  sensation to see that almost all of the farmable land near Paris had been turned into suburbs. Les pauvres don't deserve waterfront estates. Besides, we all know what becomes of les banlieues...

There wasn't much progress technologically. The wise men are still trying to come up with an alphabet.

As per infrastructure, Aubagne finished the barracks and is building a granary. Paris finished a library. Lyons finished a granary and is building a forge. Orleans is building a library. Louis was feeling amiable, so whipping wasn't applied to public projects.

Egypt and China came up with proposals to open borders, but were turned down. I understand that we've open borders with the Malinese and the Persians. That is just fine, but requires watching Lyons' borders like a hawk. One sign of a settler and those agreements are going down le privy.

Three new units were introduced into le Légion. While checking the ranks of his new soldiers, Loius decided that something had to be done about these annoying squatters near Paris. Their odours really offended Louis' delicate sinuses...

Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

And they soon saw the error in their ways.

Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

Our soldiers took some gold as a tribute from the savages.

Thoughts:

I think that we should follow Sommelier's tech plan. It allows us to do the necessary bee-lining very neatly.

Paris is building a settler with 7 turns left. The gem site should be settled next. Louis keeps insisting that gold isn't glittery enough.

And here is how la France glorieuse stands compared to the rest of the world.

Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

Things clearly need mproving. So, cottages. Evereything else will come easily after that.

This minutiae makes Cochon up. Make the king proud.

ok - I've got it. The hunt for Red Bordeaux will continue

Whoops  you stress some interesting stuff here...

Weedy move indeed : on second thought I think I just have not used my brains on this one. Maybe I was tired or just took the lake for a river or sth like that :smoke:.

My apologies to the team, feel free to expropriat the poor and   some more at me :crazyeye:

Hey Cochon, quoi de neuf?

S been a few days, did you and Louis finally find those wineyards and have been  ever since???

Yeah, some kind of a status report would be nice.

Je m'excuse - internet server was down yesterday. Am about to play and will post the grisly details ce soir

....but Louis will show them he is not a ruler to be trifled with

Ok, check out the first thumbnail below. That is an insult to France, and as good Gaullists, we need to repatriate our country men (plus the copper and the Holy city would be nice too). Rest assured, Louis has not taken this lying down - already a crack force of axemen and swordsmen are scurrying from tree to tree with vengeance in mind.

In other news:
- Gem city founded
- assorted cottages etc built
- Alphabet discovered (hurrah). Trades as detailed in the thumbnails below.
- GProph born in Paris. We can trade Monarchy for MonoT with Alex or MC + 110 gold with Mansa for MonoT and Calendar, leaving our prophet free to discover Theology. Alternatively there is a Holy Shrine to be built in Gaul (perhaps we should rename it Calais.....?) in the very near future
- few barbs sighted trying to sneak up on Paris from the south

Some good trades there, Cochon. Really getting some value out of monarchy.

Sommelier, you're up, so the decision whether or not to assault Gaul is yours, but damn that would make a nice city...

As for the prophet, bulbing theology would just fit so nicely in our tech plan. On the other hand, a shrine would certainly help our economy.

Whaddaya lot think?

What I didn't show in the screenshots is we have 3 swords and 2 axes 2 tiles from Gaul's borders. Easily enough to liberate the city.

Christianity has yet to be discovered.... and Theology is the next GProph tech after MonoT

C'est une provocation outrageuse !!!

Gaul shalt be ours.:king: Why Calais, by the way? :)

But we need not to stray from the techplan, methinks. Sommelier, I think you should trade for monotheism (now wait a minute cochon, did you or did you not trade monarch to Mansu for maths???) and BURN erm.. use the prophet to grab theology (chances are we'll pop another prophet someday for the shrine).
After that we should aim for music and divine right asap.

Some scouting (At this point it means going for optics soon after divine right) needs to be planned for we still don't know which goddamn bastids have the bloody wines

French town occupied by the English in ~the 1400-1500s

Mais bien sur - I did all the trades in the screenshots. To get MonoT from Mansu (+Calendar) we have to trade MC and some gold. Alex will give us MonoT for Monarchy - not a great exchange rate, but the trading value of Monarchy is becoming reduced anyway as Louis in his enthusiasm has decided to share its benefits with all the other AIs (altho' there can only be 1 true king....).
Re. tech - out research rate is hurting - courthouses from CoL sure would be nice.

After liberating Gaul, we should turn our attention to evicting the squatters encamped on the western fringes of our empire. I haven't seen any more Rosbif lands so I think our war with Vicky will fizzle out after she has paid suitable tribute in 10 turns
