Où sont mes vins?

Nah, there really isn't need for discussion this early. We've just got to expand towards the isthmus and remember that warriors won't be much use against barbs for too long, especially with this isolated start.

No wine yet :(

However, on behalf of his wondrous Majesty, le Roi Soleil, I am delighted to report:
- The flood of culture emanating from our glorious capital has impressed all for far and wide (and the fat cross expanded). One particular miserable collection of primitives were so impressed they bestowed us with something called a 'map'. We need to get our scientists to work researching paper to understand how these 'map' things are produced
- To help the spread of glorious French influence (and to enable us to grab the nearby horses (should be a great source of food) a band of intrepid 'settlers' was founded in Paris in around 2500BC, charged with spreading the word of Louis' majesty across the globe (or at least as far as a new city). The city of Orleans was subsequently settled in 2360BC with access to 'fruits de mer', horse steaks and more milk as Louis' gluttony for Brie was prodigious
- French mystics unlocked the secrets of the cosmos in 2800BC. They are now working on how to chop down trees and work Bronze
- Our exploring warrior showed a lion not to mess with the French fighting men and recieved knowledge of how to hide behind trees as a result (knowledge that would no doubt serve the French army well for years to come....). He subsequently stumbled across the lands of a strange man with a hat made out of cigars who went by the name of Cyrus and a sandal-clad scout who spoke of a Greek called Alexander. No wine tho'
- We built a couple of extra warriors too

Okay, looking good.

Sommelier, you're up for 20. Try to get some serious defence going. If there's lots of empty land around, the barbs will get nasty sooner or later.

Once we get the horse-meat farm up and running we can get chariots to help defence. Plus hopefully we will have a handy source of copper.
We also need to get some commerce going to maintain a decent tech-rate

Louis continues to oversee the development of the French empire.

In fact, some local tribesmen were so honoured to be visited by French diplomats that they imparted knowledge of advanced metalworking techniques for the glory of all France.

Paris has a source of iron and soon we will be able to train soldiers to strike fear into the hearts of any enemy.

The construction of the road to link the great cities of Paris and Orleans has been completed, and wild horses broken for use by our chevaliers (the first unit of which will complete in Paris imminently). French wise men have learned the secrets of Bronze Working, Iron Working, Fishing and will shortly learn how to meditate.

The exploring warrior is currently recuperating after defeating a bunch of bandits and we have another camped on a desert hill to the west of Paris to discourage any from appearing in that region. I've also marked a couple of potential future city sites - feel free to change/veto.

Quite the landmass we've got there, let's get it settled ASAP.

Iron working from a hut - sweet. :goodjob: And iron near Paris is just too good.

So, towards the Oracle and monarchy.

So, towards the Oracle and monarchy.
That sounds fine to me, plus it'll allow us to grow our cities nice and big to beat down on the Vanilla AI :D
(We've got tons of health resources and HR will give us all the happy we could ever want)

With all the land we've got boxed off (still no sign of any explorers from the north-east), it might be worth promoting a couple of chariots up the flanking/senetry path to bust extra large amounts of fog cheaply and effectively until our expansion can catch up.

Even though the French explorers have travelled far and wide, hiding behind trees, they STILL haven't spotted any grapes fit for a fine bottle of Bordeaux. And Louis is growing not too fond of his "Royal drink."

But fortunately, things are looking up back home. Priesthood has been given some serious thought and the wise men are now building in Paris a nifty gadget that can predict the future. Louis will have no end of fun bragging about it when he invites the other rulers around.

Louis then wanted the wise ones to think up a way to make him a true monarch and find out how to make wine for the coronation party. Faced with such a taxing prospect, they convinced Louis that it would be better to first devise a way to store the wine. Thusly they bought some extra time and the art of pottery is now being perfected.

In Paris, a unit of Royal Charioteers was trained. The governor then decided to whip a bunch of people to death in order to get some people chop trees outside the city. The mysterically ensuing extra hammers helped tremendously with building the see-into-future device.
Oh, and Louis was overjoyed when they POPPED ANOTHER ONE. Now he will have jewelry like no other.

Orleans helped the milt'ry effort by training another unit of cavalerie. A workboat was then ordered. Louis' tables will soon be swaying with the sea's bounty.

Le cavalerie then headed off to scout the northeastern hinterland.
They found a minor camp of savages.
Civ4ScreenShot0029.jpg

A rather larger camp.
Civ4ScreenShot0033.jpg

They also beat up some nosy savages and learned how to spot enemies from afar. That skill will sure come in handy when planning "organized" retreats...

Notes:

This, methinks, should be our expansion plan.
Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

Orleans and the other isthmus city make good commercial centers, whereas the filler city between Paris and Orleans looks like a good military city, being too mediocre to fit another role.

The Oracle will complete in 3-4 turns. Metal casting will make a good free tech. Industrious+gold+forges=good. :D

And wihp that workboat with one turn left and apply the overflow to another one. Orleans can then crank out settlers very quickly.

So, le cochon is up.

Gotta love the popped another one™ moment for that gold. Paris is starting to look like a decent capital site now. :D

If we go the MC route from the Oracle, the gems nearby will be handy too (and building the Colossus in Orleans would help the isthmus become even more profitable).

I have to admit I was skeptical about the filler city site initially, but at size 4 it'll produce 11 hammers which isn't too shabby at this stage of the game. It can just sit there and pump units non-stop while the other cities develop. Because of that, it might be worth settling next before going for the second isthmus site (the only one the AI could beat us to), followed by the gem site.

Random variant thought - is it worth naming the filler city Aubagne (the Légion Étrangère HQ) since it'll be producing our early military?

Thinking slightly longer term, I can't see early war helping as we've got so much land to ourselves that we might as well settle peacefully and pursue our variant wonders/techs before dispatching the Légion Étrangère when we eventually find the wine.

Aubagne sounds just great. :D

It might even be a potential site for the Heroic Epic. Le Légion should have a honorific, although this far they've just hidden in bushes. :mischief:

The Colossus would be great but a real pain in the butt to build with Orleans' max 8hpt without copper. We'll see.

Brief post - sorry (getting late....)

  • Oracle built in Paris. ("Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest leader of them all?";"Why, you are of course Louis. And would you like free Metal-Casting with that?"
  • Finished the science of how to make wine holders (aka pottery). Now, if only we had something to put in them.....
  • Considered going for Monarchy. But decided that it would be polite to write first to invite all the other leaders to the coronation. So, discovered writing instead
  • Almost finished a settler in Paris for Aubagne (should be able to pop-rush next turn)
  • Finishing a forge in Orleans (keeping that Collosus option open...)
  • Spotted the lands of Les Anglais (aka Perfidious Albion) - although we have yet to be formally introduced to their leader
  • Where is the bloody wine???????

Cochon! Ou est le savegame?

Good work on the turns. Is it worth me quickly churning out another settler to grab the western isthmus site before Les Anglais sully the land there and fill in Aubagne after that?

In terms of tech, Monarchy is probably the way forward after writing. Then alphabet so we can head towards music and catch up on anything we've skipped?

And finally, how many turns am I up for? Do I assume 20?

Good turns.

Probably worth it to rush a little to secure the isthmus and Aubagne.

Sommelier, play 15 or 20 as you see fit. I played 15, dunno how many Cochon did.

Hellooo all you fellow wine drinkers!

Do you want some more help? I notice that despite the very appealing (to me) varant, your roster is still half-empty (or half-full).

I would like to sign up as Eshnunna, aka Le Savant FoU

And cracking jokes about my fellow concitoyens would be a real pleasure.

Okay Savant, you're in.

So the roster goes

Cochon - trying to find le save
Sommelier - up
Savant - on deck
Loup - praising the gods for a fourth player

Je le trouve

PS As I blatently diregarded Le Loup's sage advice regarding whipping the 1st WB and using the overflow for the second, perhaps we should whip the forge 1 turn from completion and overflow to a 2nd WB

Okay, thx 4 taking me in.

I'm not too excited about the usefullness of the second isthmus city, but denying the perfide Albion horses sure would be worth it.

We'll soon need to cottage a bit, in order to expand at a fast pace : I'd settle commerce cities first, I guess no one will snatch the Aubagne site from under our nose :)

I am sure Louis craves for some jewellry to improve his brand new shiny massive pure gold crown. Whaddya mean he's not even king yet???
We should immediately aim for HR!! it ought to be a top priority (even if happines is not too much of a concern with gold, gems and cheap forges).
