OB08 - Tall Poppy Syndrome

Cernunnos, what prank is this? Truly the Angel of Growth should give the elves of the summer court more food and forests than this! Or is this simply a test of our faith in you, and are we supposed to head somewhere else than this barren wasteland?

So we took a look from the hills, and found that indeed the land to our south was much more suitable for the elves. We settled Evermore in the delta, with rice nearby to feed us, and wine to support the research.

But once again Cernunnos seeks to test our faith. This time, he unleashes his wild hordes of beasts upon our poor scouts. Within 10 turns, both have died: one to a spider to the West, one to a griffin to the East.

Not much to say, really. We teched Agriculture and Crafting, built a worker and a few warriors.

Got it. The plan will be to start teching toward Fellowship of Leaves.

I won't be able to post until tomorrow at the earliest.

Guys,

I hate to say it but moving into the new house is a big load of work. Yes, I probably should have anticipated this when I signed up in the first place, but the restart gives me at least a bit of moral ground in bowing out ;).

(Belated) Good luck! Your last game was a blast to watch.

Turn 46 Inherited turn
Switch research to Ancient Chants. MM from 2 food/1hammer tile to 2 food/1commerce. AC in 14.

Turn 50
Evermore finishes: Warrior --> Warrior
Warrior sent exploring SE

Turn 51
Thucydides publishes largest empires in the world, and we are #1 (Alphabetical?)
Evermore grows to size 4.

Turn 56
First Winery built. Worker moves to build the second.
Our Warrior is eaten by a Tiger. :( No more exploring!
Event: Muris Clan goblins are dumping waste on one of our hill tiles. We have Nature Mana, so promise to send an Adept to clean it up. No harm, no foul!

Turn 59
Tech learned: Ancient Chants Begin Mysticism (in 26).

Turn 60
Evermore grows to size 5.

Turn 61
Auric Ulvin completes Samhain
At least we know the Ilians are around.

Turn 62
Evermore finishes: Warrior --> Warrior
Frostling Wolf Riders spawned by Samhain show up to our South. Will they attack Evermore? :hmm:
Our worker is forced to abandon the Winery build, and hustles back to Evermore.

Turn 63
The Wolf Rider attacks:
Fostling Wolf Rider DEFEATS Warrior.
We barely scratched him! [pissed] Adding insult to injury, it also pillages our rice paddy (bastard). A second Wolf Rider is inbound. This looks bad! :please:

Turn 64
The second Wolf Rider attacks...
Fostling Wolf Rider DEFEATS Warrior

And with that, Evermore falls, and we suffer an IGNOMINIOUS DEFEAT!

So in the interest of second guessing, I replay the turns, only this time I keep the Warrior that was killed exploring at home.

Events transpire as before, only this time, we are attacked by a Wolf Rider and a Lizardman...
Arendel's Warior defeats Frostlin Wolf Rider
Arendel's Warior defeats Lizardmand

Both are DEFEATED! We still lose the rice paddy, however.

So soldiering on...

Turn 68
A poison-bladed Goblin spawns from the goblin fort. I move our only uninjured Warrior to to fortify in the forest to the SE. The goblin attacks...
Arendel's Warior defeats Goblin Hooray for us! :)
A Frostling, sans Wolf, is inbound. I fortify a different, now-healed Warrior in the same forest.

Turn 69
The Frostling does not attack, and backs off.

Turn 72
The second Winery is built. Our Worker moves to rebuild our rice paddy.

Turn 73
Evermore reaches max population (6), so I switch to building a Settler (in 37, but that will decrease when the rice paddy is rebuilt.)
Another poison Goblin is inbound. He avoids our still fortified Warrior to get at our Worker. The Worker is pulled back into Evermore.

Turn 73
Thwarted at killing our Worker, the Goblin takes out his frustration on our Warrior...
Arendel's Warior defeats Goblin Another one for us! He earns a promotion, and is promoted to Woodsman I.
Event: Astrologers report that the Great Serpent has moved into prominence Only Ashen Veil tribes can benefit, so no benefit to us.

I play to turn 80. Mysticism will complete in 2 turns, and so will our rice paddy. The Settler will be built in 27, but that will drop to 20 or so when the rice is back online.

Given our inglorious defeat, I'm not sure if we want to play this or to re-roll. I did get a split-second peak of the map after our defeat, so I do know the basic shape of the world, but I did not get any sense of the terrain, or who our opponents are.

If you want to go on, the save is below:

Then take it away, Oz!

Played to turn 117 (the border expansion of our second city, which I founded on the gold/sheep spot in the NE). Met Alexis, whose scout came from SW. Researched Education. On my last turn, RoK was FIADL.

Since I'm feeling a bit ill now, I won't give a per-turn report and there isn't much to report about. The pictures of the glorious Elven nation at the end of my rule and the save are in the attachements.

Inherited turn
Research already a few turns into mining, plus we have gold, so stick with it (mining in 17, hunting would take 48)
Evermore has 1 angry person, but no swapping around of tiles would give better hammers/gold even if I starved off the angry person, so he can stick around until we can get the 1 happy from gold
Evermore was building pagan temple, but it won't give happiness as we don’t have incense, swapped to a worker for the gold when mining finishes.
118
Orthus spawns somewhere down over here:
Spoiler :
orthus.jpg

119
Meet a Kandros Fir Khazad scout south of us, he is of course the founder of RoK, 156 score to our 147
124
Worker done in Evermore, start warrior. Worker helps finish a cottage and then starts on a road to Hyll to connect gold.
Find Khazad borders about 10 tiles south of Evermore
128
Scouting warrior gets killed by combat 3 bear in the far south
Spoiler :
3bearb.jpg

Evermore warrior done, another started
Research dropped to 80% as we run out of hut money
131
Hyll completes warrior, starts elder council
132
Evermore finish worker, let it finish pagan temple (2 turns, maybe use to get a priest later for shrine)
134
Evermore’s temple finishes, start on settler.
135
Mining comes in, we have copper north of evermore, 1 border pop away. There is another to the SW and a third in the far S.
Thinking we are still going for FoL, I start on hunting.
141
Mokka kill far away to the ESE
142
Orthus kill in the same direction he spawned in to the WSW, too far to be from Khazad
143
Find Cardith direction west of us. Hes got +6 with us right now, and is almost 100 ahead of us in score, and the highest on the power graph.
149
Get a nice forest growth near Evermore
151
Wow, another forest growth near Evermore (oops I named both shots the same thing so it saved over the first. The first growth was one tile south of the second.
Spoiler :
foreste.jpg

156
Road to Evermore from Hyll complete, evermore no longer unhappy
157
Alexis proves the world is round, which seems kind of early.
158
Settler finished, next build on warrior with nothing invested. There is also probably a better way to balance Evermore so it doesn’t grow into unhappy, but I don’t see a way to do it that doesn’t lose more than it gains.
Killed a few barbs. A goblin just poped north of Evermore. Warrior in the top forest to keep lizardman from the den from harasing Hyll.
We slipped a little in score, mainly due to researching hunting which is a more expensive tech.
Settler and 2 warriors ready to go in the capital.

edit: Oh and the save:
