Hello Civ Fans

How do you use Observation Balloons. Built one and moved it around a city I was attacking and could not do anything with it. Do your catapults or bombards get extra range?

It gives siege weapons (catapults, bombards, etc) extra range. It works for the unit it's stacked with and adjacent units.

Did they fix the bug(?) where they didn't work with stacked units, but only adjacent units? It used to be like that which was really stupid.

I'm glad AI doesn't use any! The game might become too hard if they did! Hope Firaxis won't teach AI how to use them in the summer 2021 patch!

I know, right? I had actually forgotten they existed!

It's sort of funny, that once you get the ability to give your siege units 3 range, now you can build aircraft.

or just put a balloon and an artillery inside your city as a garrison!

a few other questions:
  • a lvl4 rocket artillery with a balloon has 5 range even, if i'm not mistaken? (did any of you get that once?)
  • does the balloon work with battleship or missile cruiser?

It only works with units that have "bombard strength" that is bombards, artillery, rocket artillery. In theory bombers too but I havent tested.

Battleships, missile cruisers, field cannons have "ranged strength" and doesnt apply

Imho 1 balloon is a must. Really useful because you can avoid city defenses. That is why I never promote my artillery units through the defensive branch

The promotion and the balloon stack. In 1.0 even balloon and balloon stacked... Doesn't work with ships.

well, time to test then!

Edit: just testet, doesn't extend range if on same tile or adjacent to a jet bomber. 15 range is far enough anyhow :mischief:

!

I didn't even know these things existed. Was always just running a bunch of artillery at a city. That would give machine guns 2 range too, wouldn't it?

No, Machine Guns have a ranged attack and not a bombard attack. An Observation Balloon doesn't help them.
