OCC Wonders

I've been sort of obsessed with OCC lately, and I was just wondering how others felt about which wonders to build.

Some wonders are essential, in my opinion -- the SSC wonders (Colossus, Cope's, College), Shake's, Apollo. If possible, I like to get Darwin's, as well.

On the other hand, some wonders are useless, in my opinion -- all of the happiness wonders (other than Shake's), Pyramids, Great Wall, Great Library, Eiffel Tower, Adam Smith's, Statue of Liberty, Leo's, Sun Tzu's.

Then there are all of the in-betweeners. I rarely build Marco Polo, but I almost always build the UN, so that I can turn down the other civs' repeated demands for my spaceship techs.

Anyway, that's enough rambling for a topic-starter. I'm interested to hear what you guys think.

I'd say that Marco's is vital so that you can give away techs to other civs that started a long way from you and thus increase the speed of your making new discoveries. If you've got no chance of meeting these civs then you have to have Marco's to benefit from trading. If you can sign treaties with everyone as early as possible then there is a much better chance of surviving. Getting the maps of other civs is pointless in OCC, but hell, give the techs away like they're going out of fashion - they soon will be with all the tech boosts you get!

Actually, I find trading maps quite helpful in that I can see where all of the other cities are and where best to send my caravans/freight.

I do agree that Marco's can be very helpful in making the contact, gifting tech, and hopefully making and keeping alliances. Actually, later I may not build the UN and instead set up embassies with dips early (though I know the UN can help you keep the peace once you stop doling out the techs - usually with combustion).

Basically any city-specific Wonder will be quite helpful in OCC. King Richard's Crusade, for example, is quite nifty - pollution be damned!

I only played OCC once, but in that game I found Leo's quite useful. I'd bribe other units, until I had a pretty decent NON defensive army fortified around my city radius. Since I only had one city, tying up production in order to upgrade my military would have been a pain.

The Hanging Gardens are often a great way to induce early growth. Leonardo's Workshop is helpful to turn your non-settlers into non-engineers, and to upgrade your ships and caravans. Depending on the map, Marco Polo or the Lighthouse can be priority endeavours.
The UN, on the other hand, is a waste of time since the AI can easily avoid its effect by simply refusing to talk with you, or by sneak-attacking every single turn.
