y'all are gonna think I'm a . .. .. .. .. .....I've played like, three epic games and some conquests on chieftain and kick the . .. .. .. . out of the AI, no competition except in maybe early Middle Ages. I always build GR's (never the great library cause i'm always so far ahead in techs, but it seems like building pyramids and sun tzu's at the least are worth the shields. and decrease maint.) anyways, I always build nearly every city imp., which i think is my downfall when it gets harder. When it gets harder i am always behind in techs and GR's, I never get a thing. My questions are:

1. what city imp's should I focus on, which are optional, and which should I never build

2. how many cities do i want on standard size and large maps?

3. Why does everyone tell you CxxxxC, and not a lot further than that?

4. how many workers per city? ( I like a lot, maybe tooo many)

what else....do you guys put your happy sliders up? I usually leave it at 1 or 0 and just garrison troops and make entertainers do keep production movin....

okay, i'd love some advice

1. what city imp's should I focus on, which are optional, and which should I never build

Totally depends on the type of victory you are going for mate, and the type of Civ your playing with. If your a "just see what happens" kind of player like me, I usually build granaries & libraries and make sure I get Sun Tzu's (i'm a warrer most of the time). But it depends what % your science is on. I haven't mastered the ability to go 0% science, so mine is always as high as I can reasonably get it. Thus I build libraries and not marketplaces.

2. how many cities do i want on standard size and large maps?

Map type? I played continents on regent. By the time I controlled my continent I have 125 cities. Thats a large map. Just played a large 70% archi and I had a small land mass with about 80 :) thats because I built a science farm of CXCXCXC.

3. Why does everyone tell you CxxxxC, and not a lot further than that?

I was never a believer, until I played the aforementioned game. I used CXXC for my core. By the time I met the next biggest Civ, i was 16% territory + 31% population vs 15% & 15%! It is great for a few reasons...Your settlers don't have to move far. You can relocate units using roads from one city to another in a turn. Its very defensive, really organised (good for corruption). You need less road building and thus get more tile improving and you never miss any tiles! Try it, you'll never go back!

4. how many workers per city? ( I like a lot, maybe tooo many)

In the early game I think i have 1 for every 3 cities?! Maybe less. In the late game I usually have hundreds of them little slave beasties! They railroad my land, then I shoot them!

Warlord isn't tough! Just always have a plan, attack in stacks, trade with your friends, but always keep them behind you, use artillery with infantry and B-line Military Trad & Replaceable Parts!

Welcome to CFC, shnishni!

1. what city imp's should I focus on, which are optional, and which should I never build
Build those improvements that your empire needs the city to have. Don't build improvements just because you can. One of the most common mistakes in the "newbie needs help" threads is that new players tend to build every improvement everywhere. No need for that. Figure out how you want to win & build with that in mind.

2. how many cities do i want on standard size and large maps?
I want lots. On a standard continents map, 70% water, I usually get around 100 on my own continent . . . that's after I've cleared it of everyone else, of course.

3. Why does everyone tell you CxxxxC, and not a lot further than that?
Exwing17 has already touched on some of the reasons. I'd just add: Because your cities can't work more than that. Are you familiar with the "fat cross?" No matter how much your cultural boundaries expand, no city can ever work a tile outside of its fat cross. Even at CxxxxC, there's a lot of unworked ground until very late in the game.

4. how many workers per city? ( I like a lot, maybe tooo many)
Shoot for 2 per city as a rule of thumb.

what else....do you guys put your happy sliders up? I usually leave it at 1 or 0 and just garrison troops and make entertainers do keep production movin....
Whatever it takes to keep my cities from rioting. Use the sliders instead of entertainers, especially if the entertainers are in your core cities.

Post a save. Let some of the resident experts take a look at your game.

Truth be told, we see the same basic problems in the "newbie needs help" threads on a fairly regular basis. Here are some of the usual suspects:
  • Too few workers;
  • Too many unnecessary buildings;
  • Ineffectiver city placement;
  • Ineffective expansion in the early game.

Good luck.
