I started Civ V for the first time over the weekend, played about a dozen games... restarted every so often once I thought I got the hang of it.

For three days I was using the Great Leader CULTURE BOMB in my city, thinking it worked like the older games (in previous games a Great Leader simply made a work of art which added +3000 culture to the city). I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.

Imagine my surprise when it finally clicked in my head and I used it correctly.

I used them to good effect in a One City Challenge game with Siam on an archipelago map. I was alone on a fairly large island and even though my city's cultural border eventually got very large it still didn't cover the whole island quick enough. So I used culture bombs to cover any spots where the AI might have been tempted to settle a city.

In my previous game, I built the wonder that gives 2 Artists at the request of one of my city states.

Artist #1 went to taking the Iron away from a rival civ; (that I was already at war with so who cares that they hated me more for that).
Artist #2 went to taking a natural wonder that produces cultural away from an allied city state. (10 turns later since there's a delay between cultural bombs)

Wait, shouldn't the city-state logically hate you for that?
Did it give you an influence drop to steal the CS's borders?

Nope, city states don't care if you cultural bomb their territory; only the other major powers do.

I was thinking that they should buff Great Artists by increasing the culture bomb radius from one-ring to a two-ring radius.

You could pull off some better land grabs then and GA's would be more desirable in non-culture games.

I'm pretty sure you get negative influence for it. That's what happened when I did it (post march patch at least)

I wonder if the city-state will ever declare war. If not, I now make it my personal mission to create a Great Artist generating city, and create a 1 tile city-state.

I am almost certain this is wrong. I distinctly remember bombing a spot between two CSs, taking a couple tiles from them both, and then losing my Friend status immediately.

I do not recall if they declared war though. I mean seriously... CS gonna conquer ME?!?!! mwahahahahahaha..

A CS will not declare war unless it sides with an AI. You will definetly loose influence, which will balance back out over time. It is probably a little higher than having your unit trespass, but a -60 is war status and it is not that high.

I suppose if you left a unit long enough on CS land to get -60 then they might declare war. I am curious if that would be an exploit instead of you doing the DoW.

They won't! No matter how negative your influence is, they won't DoW on you without a major Civ help!
