Maybe some of you can answer this:

If I have an MPP with France, and France declares war on Germany first, when the Germans counterattack, am I obligated to go to war against Germany? It seems that if France starts it I shouldn't have to enter the war, but I don't think that this is true.

Sad, but true. Just another bug/mistake in the game Firaxis needs to fix.

Umm, I believe that you wouldn't be required to declare war until German units attack French units on French soil. Not really a bug then, since it is in line with the intent of MPPs, that two nations would help to protect one another against an aggressive nation (one attacking units in an MPP ally's soil).

And such pacts in human history operated in much the same fashion, with MPP partners being drawn into wars they did not want, but were obliged to honor.

This is my understanding. You need to activate 'show friendly' & 'show enemy' moves to be able to see how you were forced to honor the MPP. Otherwise, one might think its a bug.

zeeter: Gastric is correct, but it also is activated if the French unit is in neutral terriotry....

btw: In my last game, other civs kept coming into the war against me via MPP without my units firing on anyone - bug here???? sadly, i don't ahve a save, so I'll shut up on this until I have....

Gastric is correct. If Germans attack any French unit on German land, you declare war. As long as the fighting is taking place in neutral/German land, you don't have to declare war.
