Common event in Western north america; large numbers of asian immigrants were imported to work on difficult stretches of railway construction, only to be attacked by white populations once that work was done because the hardworking immigrants were seen as a threat to white workers' jobs.

Next to its remarkable inability to respect the property and civil rights of natives, my home province of British Columbia's darkest hours were in similar efforts to attack, curtail or otherwise humiliate asian immigrants from China, Japan and India. The U.S. has a similar record, owing to similar lobbying from Californians, Oregonians and Washingtonians galore.

1667 Treaty of Andrussovo Russia/Poland signs peace treaty

In 1648 an eastern Polish nobleman (Wisnowiecki) sparked a Cossack rebellion that turned over a years' time into a Ukrainian peasant rebellion, and involved Tartars. Just about the time Poland was able to suppress most of that (1+ year), the Russians, Turks and Swedes invaded. The Swedes in particular did great damage, overruning most of the country before being expelled. The Treaty of Andrusowo ended the Russian part of the war, and Poland lost the eastern half of Ukraine. Poland was ultimately able to drive out the invaders, though it lost some real estate to each. The real damage was that the country lay in ruins and was never able to fully recover from this disaster.

Let us never speak of this treaty again...
