I've heard a lot about the single city strategy. From what I gather, you build one city and put all of your effort into micromanaging it. I would like to hear some of your thoughts on this particular way of play.

It is probably the easiest way to win by spaceship at diety or any level for that matter,Easy meaning 1 city is alot less work than a massive empire. It doesn't take very long either.
It seems to take advantage of being "weak and pathetic".The stupid ai has no idea what you are doing and only sees you as weak and no threat whatsoever...until...its too late

Your only goal is simply to launch. With smaller goals along the way.You are not concerned with much that doesn't meet that end.

It is also a very quick way to learn much about the game. The Super Science City concept can and should be incorporated into any game. The power of Trade is quickly revealed with 1 city.

Is another way to play that is completely different from normal play.In OCC you don't ever want to see Monotheism, for example.

If you want to get better then you should be familiar with how and why OCC works.

Why not? I've read a lot about the OCC, and look forward to trying it when I get some time to play CIV, but don't see why Monotheism should be a prob (OK, so it means the AI could get Mike's, but not a big deal if they are not attacking you surely?)

Monotheism is not needed for Spaceship technology. It would only add turns to that goal.
There are numerous techs that are not required.Since beaker requirements are culminative, any unneccessary techs will just add unwelcome turns to the total.

BTW, Monothiesm is not needed for happiness (e.g., cathedrals) even at deity because the uber-cathedral of Shakespeare's Theatre is also used to eliminate the need even for a temple and colosseum. ST also eliminates as any luxuries to be paid, except when growing through WLT_ days... which allows you to raise the science rate even more.

OIC. I thought by your comment that you didn't want to see it, you meant in any civ during the game. Presumably it's OK for the AI to get it, 'cos it will improve his relative tech position
