Online petition for an updated Civ III editor

I personally have given up hope for the Civ 3 game code...I believe that (Like we have been told) that it has been lost to bureaucratic BS, and neither Take2 or Firaxis has it...

I would like to hold onto the hope, that this community is an adequate representation of the heart of the Civ community. In that I would like to hope that the programmers of Civ 5 would not see Civ 4 as a failure (It surely isnt) but as a "Badly taken" step forward...Im sure some things were learned, that could be implemented in a fifth game. But I also think that mechanics are more important that graphics, and I hope that the Civ 5 people understand that. Flashy graphics last a day, a good game lasts a lifetime...The fact that Civ 3 is still alive and strong, should tell them that the mechanics are more important. Customizability(I know its not a REAL word) is MORE IMPORTANT than making a great game...Make us an engine, and we will use it. We just want options to expand beyond our programing (The CFC community has gone AI!)

I would still support the requests for the Civ3 code, if it ever is admitted that someone HAS it...until then, I look forward to SSS and I hope we can affect Civ V

(This has been Spacer One's 2 cents...)

I agree. It would be nice to get the code (I personally wouldn't be able to do anything with it, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who could), but even if we don't get it, we may be able to play a part in the creation of Civ 5. That would mean a lot to me, and, I'm sure, to many others as well, which is why I've joined the "What do we want in Civ V" thread and started posting my own ideas for Civ V. And people have been coming up with really good ideas, too!

So, should someone get in touch with the 2K Games "Money People" and see what kind of cash we are talking??

i don't deal with our money. i think you'd have to enter into negotiations with our money people if you wanted to buy it.

Oups! We found the code again, it was right there under the coffee machine...

you would be contacting XXX XXXXX, who is the head producer, but I can help you with the beginning of this.

what you'll need to do before we can refer you to our lawyers and such is come up with your company and then write a detailed proposal of what you want to do. for example, you will want to license the Civ III code, which we have, and then modify it. you would never be able to release this code to the public, however, but you could, for example, sell the modified and compiled game.

but first, you'll need to create your company and draft us up a business proposal.

So everyone, empty your pocket and put the spare coins on the table, we need money to create the company.

I'll keep you posted about where it leads

Sweeeet! So this thing is actually going to happen??!!!??? Provided we shell out enough $$$$, that is?

I am down with helping to do this although unfortunatley, I have seriously no money to commit presently. But that doesn't mean I wont in a few months. (Although, I am uncertain how much. Might easily be a couple 100's though.) I don't know the amount of money this would cost.

Now what should we call the new game?

Civ III: Look what the company made us do.
Civ III: Fans United. (FU)
Civ III: Beyond the Publishers.

:p

I want to post and give my support in that thread, but unfortunately the forum for some reason doesn't want to send me the confirmation email though I registered more than 30 minutes ago.

Waiting, then... :)

They could release it to somebody whom they trust to make a patch fixing all these AI problems couldnt they?

It was in my bulk folder.

Could anyone take out a loan. I couldn't provided I have no modding skills and can't really go get one on the basis I know some people on the internet who say they can make a game.

Guys, let's not get ahead or ourselves. This is indeed the clearest information we have had in a long, long time. And I think we have to be real careful how we go from here. I will post a fairly long explanation to 2K Elizabeth of what I did last year. Unless here producer is Jason Bergman of 2K, they did not talk to me. But last November I mailed to the 2K offices in Manhattan a detailed proposal, extremely similar to Steph's proposal on the 2K site. Jason Bergman, then 2K's public liason, told me he would kick the proposal upstairs. Nothing was ever heard from it again.

So I think we have to get someone to 2K to listen to what Steph and I proposed in parallel paths.

What I proposed is really difficult part for 2K to swallow and is what Steph nailed in parts 4-6 of his proposal on the 2K site. 2K is terrified, as would I be if I was owned the code and still making money off of it, that the code gets distributed free to the world somehow, and then all hell breaks loose.

Anyway, since I was the OP, I think it makes sense that I at least reply within the thread to her. Will do so now. I will echo what Steph laid out.

I would venture to guess they are talking thousands and thousands of dollars here. :(

Edit: I would be willing to chip in a couple hundred if anyone thinks this will work.

It would be way, way more than thousands and thousands. You want to get some perspective on cost? Call up the head offices of the major game distributors in the States (I am going to do this for Canada). I am talking the retailers, like EB, Best Buy, etc. Ask them how many units of Civ III they move in a year.

I_batman, at the bottom where it says you may or may not post, it says you may not post. Even after I sign in. Is this common, or is it just me?

The prospect that the source code may be released (albeit for a large price) is great. I can see the light for ultra-mods yet;) .

I am not sure what the problem is. I have had no problems posting, but you are not the only one who has had difficulties.

Anyone out there who can help DOMINATRIX?
I can't.

So, does anyone here have an idea, how much money we are talking about? Unless we got a nice sponsor here who would be willing to fork out that amount, I doubt we would get anywhere with a collection of money.

Imagine, we all raise money to get the license, we then need to talk about ownership as only few limited people would be able to access the source code and alter it. Who would decide the changes that should be made? I see this as a very time consuming and problematic approach. It sounds all great to give the game back to the dedicated fans, but the details will be far more complicated.

If 2k would sell the code and allow the community free access to it, that would be a different story. Sort of, civfanatics own the code and veryone here could use it. Now, for that I would be willing to chip in a bit of money. It won't be a commercial success anyway, but if the whole community would profit, why not.

When i registered it sent the email to my hotmail account which threw it in the junk folder, i had to add the site to the allowed contacts before i viewed the email.
