I have a question about the open border treaties: can I have my borders open to civilians (which would allow trade, missionaries etc.), but closed to military units?

To the best of my knowledge, it has only been stated that closing of borders keeps missionaries out.
About a selective closing of borders, there doesn't seem to be valid information available, yet.

I don't know the answer, but I have to assume that you can. It wouldn't make sense for "open borders" to mean automatic RoP with anyone and everyone. What I'm curious about is whether you can have an RoP and yet closed borders.

I could be wrong but I think I remember reading that closed borders also keep YOUR missionaries in. You can't have it both ways... :mischief:

I too wonder about selective closing...but I cannot think of a good way to implement it in the game without potentially opening up a ton of other exploits and added complexities...I find it good enough that they will prevent civs you don't have ROP's with to respect your borders. I hate it when Shaka lands ten transport loads of modern armor and Mech infantry in my land to get to a civ he is at war with on the other side of my island....;)

Your missionaries can leave with closed borders, but I think they can only enter a country that you have an open border treaty with.

Anyway, I don't believe that closing your borders restricts trade at all.

Why would you want foreign missionaries within your borders?

I really don't want ANY missionaries in MY borders...foreign or domestic. ;)

But that is not the game reality, so it will make RoP decisions that much more difficult. What I really don't like is not seeing the heathen missionaries...they are invisible...how dare they try and introduce an evil formal religeon to my sensibly agnostic population :p ....but anyway, we shall see how it all plays out in a few months.

I too like the idea of closed boarders that will keep evil missionaries molesting my flock of inocent atheist children, bless then little pagan hearts you know they worship me as their god fancy that.

Anyway back to closed boarders, i'm also wondering whether settlers or workers
or scouts are able to cross over back and forth if the boarders are closed, nothing worse than catching an ememy AI send out settlers across your lands whilst your at war with them, trick is to intercept them and kill them b4 hand.

I would imagine the following will be implemented:

a) Open borders will mean units will be able to pass through, although of course if you leave military units in their territory they will get angry and ask them to leave

b) ROP and closed borders are compatible, as ROP units would act just like your units.

Just speculation though

From what I have heard in interviews, closed borders are just that-CLOSED!!! Other Civs cannot send troops, settlers missionaries etc etc AT ALL-unless they declare war with you. However, if you wish to reap the full benefits of trade, apparently you do need to have borders open to that particular nation. So this would suggest very strongly that you can be selective about with WHOM you have an Open Border agreement.
Beyond that, I know no more than you guys!!!
