Plain old DOS

Does exactly what you tell it to without
doing anything else.

This poll is incomplete. No mention of Unix, Linux, BSD, or any of the other operating systems out there. BeOS also comes to mind, too bad it's out of business.

I use Win98, and it sucks hard. But, I refuse to pay out any more money to Microslop for another operating system. I suppose I could use Linux, I have tried Mandrake, but it's just a bit beyond my level of comfort. I'm a computer veteran, but not a computer master. Win98 sucks, but it takes no brains to operate it. If Linux were more user friendly, I might take the plunge.

I can't tell you which is the best but I can tell you Win ME is a huge piece of crap. I tried using it for almost 2 weeks and have never seen so many errors, crashes and overall flaws. I didn't even get the Blue screen with the error half the time. Computer just reboot for no reason. Saw alot of the scandisk utility too from improper shutdowns too.

I'm still using win98 btw. Much better for my needs for now. Not the best operating system I'm sure but it works. . .most of the time.

I second the notion that ME is a piece of junk.

I had to do a reinstall on my parent's machine within 1.5 months of a fresh install. They were getting lockups, Protection errors in the kernal 32 etc etc. Eventually it just stopped booting properly.

I can't even believe microsoft is legally allowed to sell such garbage.

Different OSes are better in different areas, but IMHO XP is better overall because of:

1. Stability (compared to other Windows versions)
2. Compatibility with software
3. Availability of software (compared to Mac/Linux/etc.)
4. Performance (automatically optimizes itself without user intervention)
5. Ease of use (It's tailored for beginners, but power users can still customize it to their needs/preferences)
6. It's better than any previous Windows version (especially Millenium Edition!)

M.E. = Piece of Junk. A hybrid ill-bred piece of junk at that.

XP is the best overall, to those who vote 98 and ME I suggest you try XP it is a class above the previous incarnations.

As for Linux. The day it runs some software I want to use I might try it out. As long as it is user-friendly enough to configure for me that is...

None of the above. For a PC, it's Linux (I like SuSE). Failing that, the MAC (Even though I have no MAC). Then Win2K.
