Possibly, but I suspect that the Dell WILL perform really well, once the danged thing arrives. It was lost by UPS so I can't really criticise Dell too much just yet and it cost $1,650 including tax and shipping for a Pentium M 1.73, 17" 1920x1200 screen, 2GB RAM, 60 GB - 7,200rpm Hard Disk, geForce 6800 graphics and a battery that should genuinely last 2 hours while gaming.
I doubt that Alienware has anything close to that spec for the price. Plus, since they mostly use desktop CPUs, the laptops suck battery power and get very hot, from what I've heard.
I needed something that was genuinely mobile, powerful enough to run Huge Civ IV maps and affordable. The Dell works for me, but your needs may be different.
