Orthanc's Creation Thread

Back from vacation!

Has anyone else gone to Kentucky and not seen a single Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant?

Uh, didn't you say you were going to do the dragon from Zelda?

Right series, wrong dragon, though I'd love to have the one you showed (Volvagia, he rulez). Making a zelda dragon was mentioned in this thread, but if I remember (yes, too lazy to check the records) Stormy or someone just wanted a normal asian dragon. All three are useful/needed, but I'll be going with the generic asian dragon this time around.

Forgive my ignorance, what's a Kirin?

Finally, one of my earlier units was a Lodya, basically a viking boat more from the russian area, and I do believe, along with the Firaxis one, there are several other longboats out there already. Do some hunting, there's plenty in the shipyards (not just mine) already.

Kirin are what could be considered the East Asian version of the unicorn. They are mostly depicted as a mix of deer and dragon, but sometimes appear more like a deer-unicorn hybrid with a single horn.

Hey Orthanc,
Thought I would post a quick request in here... feel free to ignore :)
We are getting close to a public beta release for LotM, and I was hoping to get some more flavor into the naval lines. Aaglo made a nice swan ship for the elves, but I was hoping we might be able to add an upgrade for them. An elven warship:

Thanks!

Not that I'd mind another boat, it's just that aaglo did make other elven boats, which are very good and would probably serve your purposes well, examples:
High-Elf Dragonship
High-Elf Eagleship

But if you want something more closely related to the Swan ship I'll put her on the list.

And while I'm here, first, we draw an S, for snake, or, dragon...:D :

Needs a head, arms and legs before moving to animation.

Thanks Orthanc! We are using Aaglo's elven boats, but have three full elf nations to populate... an upgrade to Aaglo's swanship would be so lovely :)

Well oriental dragons have always been very snake-like, but the head (which I'm currently working on) and limbs (once I get to em) change that. Here's what I've got:

Changed the preview civ-color because the red and green was making this look WAY to Christmasy. Just a few more head details left before I can get around to giving this guy a jaw:mischief: .

Looks amazing. :D

Dragons in Chinese mythology are often associated with the sky or rivers and seas, unlike Western fire-breathers. It is believed that they bring rain or storms so this particular unit could have a lightning attack or a water-based attack (although I'd favor a lightning attack). :)

Chinese dragons have four legs. Five-claw dragons, are representative of the emperor and commoners could only use the three-claw dragon representation. Five-claw dragons were believed to be exclusive only to the Chinese emperor (the Japanese emperors and the Korean kings were "permitted" only to use the 4-claw dragon, which is used to represent princes). However, the Koreans actually have a reprsentation of a seven-claw dragon in one of the Joseon palaces. :mischief:

This is working out great Orthanc

How big do you plan to make the finished unit? One thing that I always found detracting (but also most challenging for unit makers) is how large they were in the game. I like the old dragons we have, but never really liked how they covered an entire city block.

If this unit were to be coiled during default and fidget, it would be smaller, but that might not be the look you're going for.

Size is always a good question, obviously this has to look bigger than a standard infantry, but at the same time infantry look as tall as sailing ships:crazyeye: . It'll definately be coiled to some extent, when I get to the animation stage I'll put up previews to work out these questions.

For now, the head is done, just got those legs to make. Each one will be identical in design, but to make them all capable of independent movement it'll require re-creating the code for each leg, meh. here's the finished head:

One thing's certain, this thing has the largest number of moving parts of any of my creations, though Rex comes pretty close 2nd.

The head looks wery good Im gona have to find you something real hard to make it challenging for you since your real good

I have a few suggestions. I like my fantasy to have some realism in it, and I think of dragons as animals. It could be a myth creature, a summon, a god or something, but to me its an animal. It has to feed. Its going to have a hard time doing so with all those spikes on its jaws.. So I say either remove them, or make them "soft", like those "sensor hair" (dunno the right term) cats have.

Also I think the horns on his head and back should be bone colored, to make them easier to make out (especially the ones on the head) and the edges of the "segments" should stay civ-colored :)

Just my 2 cents. You`re doing a terrific job Orthanc!

PS - I like the lightning attack idea :)

Oh, and I`d like it to match Kinboat`s dragon (the bigger one) in size, and a smaller one(again, like Kinboat`s smaller one) can then be made via resizing. (or you can make 2 versions with Pov-Ray, whatever is easier)

Those aren't spikes. Chinese dragons have furry heads.
