I just upgraded to Jaguar. I have been using OS9 on my 667 Tibook. I find that CivIII runs MUCH slower on OSX. Every click, move, etc. seems to wait about 2 seconds before anything happens. Opening an advisor screen takes 10-15 seconds. Has anyone else run into this? Any ideas on a fix?

My only suggestion is to max out the RAM (you didn't say how much you have). OS X speed scales up with system RAM in many cases. Civ III runs just fine on my dual 800 with 1.1GB RAM.

The new 1.21g patch increased the required RAM to play the game. I believe now 120 MB RAM is recommended. Also, I think there was an issue w/ "quartz rendering" under OS X. If this is activated, turn it off. You can access the menu for this by holding down the option or apple key when starting up Civ3. Good luck! :)

Thanks! Turning off the quartz fixed it and it now runs as fast as it did under 9.

It's about a month late, but I had the same problem and turning off Quartz helped a lot. I have a Powerbook 2000 Pismo with a piddly 8MB video card that won't handle Quartz Extreme... Mind you I'm running 512MB ram so I was a little surprised.

Well, not fer nothin', but is anyone else irritated that our high-horsepower Macs can't run right under the most recent OS? Why should I have to turn OFF features to run properly?

The implementation used in Civ3 predates 10.1.5, which introduced a much faster means of rendering with Quartz. If you have Silk installed, you can use it to get much faster Quartz drawing in Civ3 while still leaving Civ3's Quartz option disabled.
