Has anyone else noticed this using Safari (new browser from Apple)? The little title-bar-thing in the forum Mac OS X style doesn't extend all the way. Hmm.

Here it is, under Chimera. Note the little bar thingy extends all the way accross the top of the frame.

and here it is, using safari, where it... doesn't extend all the way accross the top!

Now, is it supposed to be like this? That's all I ask. It would seem that you would want it to extend all the way accross....

That's how it is for everything with the lil bar. It really isn't something too big, but since I'm used to having it there, it just really sticks out....

Well, I fired up Netscape 7, and what do I see? Yep, it's just like Chimera. I also tried it in Mozilla, well, whaddya know, works right there too. (yes, I have a lot of extra browsers laying around. ) I'm thinking it's IE and Safari that need fixing (take that Microsoft!) (and Apple... I guess. No, wait, they have an excuse; it's still beta...).

EDIT: Hmm, this is interesting.

Okay. That title bar.

...Just checked. Concur. IE and Safari both need some tweaking.

Strange that of all the browsers out there, these two would make the same mistakes...

So what do you folks actually think of Safari? I already use Mozilla, Chimera and Exploder pretty much interchangeably, but I'm trying Safari out as my primary browser. One complaint so far - it's a little sensitive when trying to reach a slow site, but otherwise I like it.

I like it.
The brushed metal is growing on me -- it's a welcome change from the "lickable, everything-glassified" look that OS X went nuts on.
The top toolbars are compact, clean and easy to read. I love the status "thermometer" behind the url. Classy touch.
It's pretty quick, too. Not orbital velocity, IMO, but quicker than IE. It also seems to handle standards better than OmniWeb, too.
Haven't used mozilla, chimera or Navigator for several months so I can't give honest comparisons.

But... I like it.

I think it's great. The brushed metal I like as well. The top toolbar I like, since it's small and compact, as mentioned, leaving plenty of room for the pages n all. It doesn't, thought, have a status bar at the bottom, and I was just wondering where the scrolling status bar messeges would go? Not that they're that important (more like annoying), but I was just wondering. What I really like, though, it does in fact seem to be faster than the other browsers. I used to like Chimera, since it was pretty fast as well. Netscape 7 seemed to be a little buggy for some reason, so I don't really use it. IE was just too microsoft-y, althought fairly fast.

I'm experimenting with it right now, and I've got a question: Has anyone tried the SnapBack? It doesn't seem to work... I click "Mark Page for SnapBack," and then never seem to get the option for "Page SnapBack." Am I doing something wrong?

you know, I would like to use safari and all the other brand new apps from apple, but allas I cant because I ONLY HAVE 10.1!!!!!!!!. So whats so bad about 10.1 or even 10.0? They are structurally every bit the same as Jaguar, just not new and improved. I understand why apple went to X and ditched 9, thats why I bought X a year ago, but this is wrong. Do they actually want people to use these new apps or are they just perks for "an improved" OS. I guess I am one of those poor folk that don't see the sense in paying $120 every year in OS upgrades. Wheres the love.
:wallbash: Dis a pointed.

Yeah, I really hate the fact that they're making us pay for everything now. Started with the upgrade for Jaguar and iTools becoming .Mac. (fortunately, I didn't buy 10.0, but went straight from 9 to 10.2.) Now they're making us pay for their "iApps." I honestly think this has gone too far...

As for Safari, I kinda figured out how to use the SnapBack... feel kinda stupid, since it's really simple, actually. Was just using it wrong...

D&G, there's a prefs option to turn to status bar on and off at the bottom of the window.

My #1 problem w/ Safari: No Tabbed Browsing. I mean, come on guys. They say they want to reintroduce innovation into the browser market, and then ignore the one major innovation that's come along since IE won the browser wars?

Also, and I know that they'll fix this, but the limitations on importing bookmarks from browsers other than IE is irritating. I mean, sure, you can take them from another browser thru IE and then get them into Safari (with a little editing of the prefs file, that is) but really.

Anyway, maybe they'll add tabbed browsing to the final release.

And in defense of Apple, as far as I can tell the only iApp they're actually making anyone pay for is iDVD -- packaged together with iMovie, iTunes and iPhoto in this "iLife" thing. But the other three apps are remaining free downloads as well.

I too was lucky and went straight from 9 to 10.2, so I know I don't feel the rage the way others do, but 10.2 WAS a significant upgrade. I think Apple confused people by making it ".2" instead of ".5" which would have followed their usual pattern, but as has been pointed out by other they are surely trying to keep the OS at "X" for as long as possible before being forced by our base10 numeric system into introducing OS11 (or OSXI? probably not)

Ahh, thanx lots! I was looking all over for that option, and finally found it under the View menu. The status bar can be useful, at times. To make sure a link takes you were you actually wana go, etc.

I don't really find that to be a major problem, as i can get along without tabs, but I sure would love to have em. I use em all the time in Chimera, and would love to have the same types of options. Yea, they really should've integrated more Mozilla concepts into this browser. Well, this is only beta, so theres plenty of room for improvement... hopefully.

But who knows how far they're gonna go with this... I've read bits and pieces that it's gonna cost $$ to get upgrades for all those programs, and they might even go so far as charging for all the iApps. Of course, that would be insane... Hopefully, they won't have to resort to such things.

I too purchased OS 10.0 and was a bit upset when it was so expensive to get 10.2. However, 10.2 is a significant advance above 10.1 and so I am getting over it. As to iApps, I for one do not see Apple charging for them. I do see why they are charging for iDVD (which is the meat of iLife). It is too large for a download and it is somewhat more of a specialty app than say iChat or iTunes. I believe that all they did with iLife is not to get the playingfield ready to start charging for all iApps, but to make those that are thinking of purchasing iDVD feel a slight nudge by including the other iApps. (I can hear Mr. Popiell saying, "And I will not only give you iDVD, but I will throw in iChat, iCal, iSync and the Ronco Ginsu knife set - all for just $49.95!")

Good to hear! I bought 10.1.3 several months before jaguar. Somehow, I missed it being promoted. This week I won an ebay bid for jaguar (full install), iphoto, developer tools, etc. for $72. :goodjob:

Soon, I'll be able to try out safari.

Well, I'll just throw in my little opinion here. I am forced to use Windows XP (on a brand new Dell that crashes more often than my 7300 with third-party G3 upgrade used to) at work, and at home I went straight from 9.0 to Jaguar which shipped with the eMac my Dad got me for Christmas (made it Xmas for real!).

And I LOVE Jaguar. I think it is the best OS I've seen and boy, is it stable. Nothing crashes it and all my old junk - some of it from system 7! - works in Classic. l love the dock and the look and the way things are organized, and all the spiffy freebies like iTunes. Hah, a friend of mine has a brand new high-end PC and she can't burn CDs nearly as easily or quickly as I can. And iCal is great - now the only thing I liked better about my work PC (outlook express calendar) than my home PC has been taken care of.

And to get back to the off-topic topic, I downloaded Safari earlier today and am trying it now. So far I like it, and it IS faster than the others I've used (mostly Netscape and Omniweb since I loathe Microsoft and won't use IE except under severe duress) Certainly it makes bookmarking easy, although I also was annoyed that I can't import my Netscape bookmarks. Well, thanks for letting me share my joys with someone who understands. The PC users at work have no comprehension. They all hate their computers and use them because they have to. Vive la Mac!

Download the new version of Safari (v51) from the Apple site RIGHT NOW! Seems there's a bit of a problem with the original. Ignore this only if you don't care about your home directory. I'm guessing this is a fix for the problem even though they don't say. Meanwhile, don't right-click on any links. Here's a quote from a victim:

"I option clicked on a link in Safari to test a download. The download changed to the name of my home directory as it was downloading. It saved into my User folder. In the blink of an eye, it removed, destroyed, evaporated, my entire Home directory, including the desktop which disappeared along with days of work projects that were on it! Safari itself disappeared because it was on the desktop. My multi-gig directory was suddenly only 32 k. Of course, all of my work files, financial records, etc. are in my Home directory; by some quirk of fate, I had just backed up work files other than those on the desktop to another drive. Yikes!!!"

Hmm, I've been right-clicking and saving pictures n such, with no problem whatsoever. The user was referring to the "Option-click," which automaticly downloads whatever is clicked. Nontheless, I won't take any chances, I have some valuable homework in my home directory...

Holy crud! Don't remember if I've right clicked or not, but I'm not going to take any chances.
Thank you for the warning!

(Didn't one of the iApps have a similar problem about a year ago?)

To clear up my original post about the OS upgrades; I love apple and understand the new systems(Jaguar), and still getting used to small upgrade numbers (.1 .2 ...). I just don't understand why they can't make these new apps for the original OS X too. I wouldn't think that would compromise performance on Jaguar, would it?
I guess I am just envious. I can't stay mad though, I still have iapps from 10.1 and windows users zzzzip. :nya:
