Other Civilizations seem too close

Hey guys, I've been spending some time in Civ 4 and love it. But, maybe this is just me, I have always felt that the other AI civs are too close to me. I would like to have some distance from them. I have searched and googled for the last hour or so and just haven't come up with anything at all.

How can I fix this? Do I need to edit a file within the directory, and if so which one? Is there a mod that fixes this or am I just SOL? I appreciate any advice.

You need to start the game using Custom Game, instead of Play Now. Your problem is the density of civilizations on the map. In Custom Game, you can either decrease the number of AIs or increase the map size. If you increase the map size, the game will increase the number of AIs to compensate. In that case, just decrease the new number of AIs.
