This is a heads up for everyone, because I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and didn't read about it in the instructions (which doesn' t mean it isn't there).

I was playing yesterday as a Democracy in like the 1980's or so. About 10 turns ago I had declared war on China with the clear goal of capturing ONE city that had an alluminum and rubber square (both desperately needed).

I got the city, but China wouldn't end the war, and got England and France to gang up on me. There were only 5 civs left (I had already killed Egyptians and Romans), so I quickly got the last civ, Germany, on my side with big bribe.

Now I am embroiled in a world war: me and Germany versus China, France, and England. I will most likely win, so that isn't an issue.

However, something interesting happened last night. All of my citizens were upset at the war, because I was in Democracy. So all of a sudden, like 10 or 15 turns into war, I get a message saying, "Your citizens have overthrown your Democracy! The Civilization is descending into Anarchy!"

I had no idea that citizens could overthrow your government choice. I haven't played through the Anarchy yet (had to sleep). But it will be interesting to see who gets to chose a new gov't when the period of Anarchy is over. And if I get to chose, will they instantly overthrow another Democracy? Would Communism be the obvious choice? It should be interesting to say the least...

Has anyone else had this happen? What was the result if you did?

This has happend to me before. Eventually you will get to choose a new goverment. If you choose democracy again and don't end the war it will happen again in time.

If you want to stay a democracy during a long war, you need to boost your luxury rate every 10 turns or so. Also, make sure you have police stations in every city. They really do help. I like to play religious civs so that when a war goes beyond a few turns, you can simply switch to communism in a turn.

I agree with eyrei. I find the religous civs to be the best way of conducting a long campaign and not sit in anarchy forever. Also, it is great when the war is over..and you can switch back right quick.

My luxury is up real high now. And as I conquer other areas I am picking up new and exciting luxuries for everyone. Oh well I'll just switch to communism when they stop the revolution. :-)

It would be really cool if when your people revolted, you had the option to forcefully suppress the revolt, with a loss of population and happiness as a result. Personally, I never trust the average man to make good decisions, and who do you think is participating in these revolts? Poor pampered rich kids who desparately need a good whipping. Sorry, got a little carried away. I have actually had my government collapse in CIV3. Used to happen to me all the time in CIV2.

Not only has this happened to me, but I have found it impossible to go back to democracy successfully even after many years of peace. I assumed that war weariness would go away quickly, but it does not.

The effect is that it's really hard to win on big maps, because you can't fight some opponents while competing in research with others.

War weariness shouldn't kick in for a long time if you are being attacked by other civs. I don't think your people would start rebelling because you are at war if it is the enemy who is trampelling through their land and killing their people. Also instead of Universal Sufferage being a great wonder there should be a small wonder that does the same thing for every civ... like "corporate media" or something that reduces war weariness.

I was attacked by my neighbor (unprovoked) and his two allies during my game while I was in democracy. Within 10 turns my people were revolting because of the war, and I was just holding my ground and fighting off the invaders! I had to switch to Communism to shut them up. I dont' think you should have to go to Communism or Monarchy just to defend your own land....

If you manage to build your city to beyond size 20 or so and you own ALL the luxuries (and I mean OWN, not traded as trading can be cutoff due to war with the supplier) and set luxury rate at 20%, you CAN wage a long war.

I have one game as Indian which I was stucked in a World War for like 50 turns due to MPP (I never bother to cancel the MPP so I was dragged into WW over and over again;) ) and I am in Democracy even :D In the process of war I captured about 7 Greek cities, 7 Russian cities which include Moscow, 8 Egyptian cities and a few Iroquis and Roman cities.

None flip back except for 1 size 19 Greek city which was recaptured after 2 turns. War Weariness did happen but nothing serious. Initial luxury rate was 10% then in the middle of the war most of the city stop celebrating (due to war weariness). I push it to 20% and again everyone is happy celebrating:D I believe having all luxuries helps big time (equals to 20 happy faces with a market) and of course Indian being a Commercial Civ helps too as more golds are generated and that equals to more luxuries even at 10%. During the whole period of war I was able to maintain my research at 4 turn (which is maximum) and making a hefty sum of 1500 per turn :king:

Another trick that I used was attacking a city and killing most of its defensive units but not all. By then the city is usually below size 12 due to all the bombing and since I was like filthy rich I just initiate Propaganda and poof the city is mine!! This way the city is without any ressistance and I never destroy roads to city that I plan to capture so its sort of like instant WLTKD the next turn:lol:

I think I actually saw this in the manual. They called it something like the only drawback of democracy.
