P3-02 - Hostile Takeover Inc.

Well done, looks like Mansa Musa will be completely destroyed in 8 turns.

WOW! WOW, WOW, WOW! a non-MASH unit with general attached! This tank general looks pretty strong, but don't you lose very few tanks even unpromoted with so much bombardment?

A UN vote is probably coming up soon (I just passed on any vote b/c I wanted to lay down some :hammer:), so we could go for a cheap diplo win too.

Let's not lose this game at this point

5. The free market will reign supreme over the world. While total victory is preferrable, growing too big to fail is also an option. (Only Conquest and Domination will be accepted)

But nice playing and report, Pindrus. I don't think this game will come back to me :)

Doesn't really matter at this point ;)

Yea, I don't remember where the General Tank first appeared, but I got a kick out of seeing it too. That's what I did when I first started playing Civ4, because that's what you'd do in Civ3. He should be the one to capture the Mali capitol!

And good thing I skipped the vote then, I had totally forgotten about that variant rule! :D

By now I'd just accept capitulations and roll over everyone. I doubt there's anyone left to stand against us. Already congrats on a good game, guys ;)

(anybody got some crazy warring ideas for a P3-03, by the way?)

I was just thinking sort of the opposite after we just played a game of delayed gratification. Something like "Must war every age" so that we are forced to use many different kinds of units and perhaps take a more military-oriented approach to the tech tree. Maybe on a large map with someone like Hammurabi or Gilgamesh who are decent fighters but have solid economic traits/UB's too?

OK Got it...

Ralph

Yay, looks good! Well, looks nearly over...

Got it, with some luck for later today (flying home this afternoon).

EDIT: Hmm, Ralph has it as well I see... I thought it was my turn?

Nocho its all yours,

Apologies for deciding that it would be in theme to do a "Hostile Takeover" of your set. :rotfl:

Take it away...

My sweet revenge is that you won't have another set now!:D

The fight for the title of heavyweight champion of the world continued between the two African contenders. CEO Shaka had all the initiative and Mansa was already left with various cuts and bruises. However, Shaka made short work of Mansa with a rapid series of uppercuts and left and right hooks.

1900 Gao falls.

1901 Tadmekka falls. Shaka gets reelected Kofi Annan over Mansa.

1902 Djenne falls. Timbuktu, city of legendary culture, falls.

1903 Walata falls. The Zulu people celebrate the birth of their 100 millionth citizen. Or maybe he was hostily taken over.

1904 Cool! Elections for the Apostolic Palace and we are contender! We vote for ourselves of course.

The foreign palace got finished in Lyon and gpt shoots up by 300! :yumyum:

Awdaghost falls. Tekedda falls. Walata falls. Mansa still doesn't want to capitulate, surely because Darius hasn't broken free yet either.

1905 We are the pope! :hatsoff:

Cherokee falls which was Mansa's last holding on the main land. He's left with a one-tile island city. Maybe you capitulate now?

Finally! Archery in 1905AD!

Mansa is pleased afterwards. :crazyeye: We captured all but one of your cities and you are happy with us. Go away, this way you'll never rule.

Indeed Darius has broken free so we dial him to see where he stands.
Civ4P302022.jpg

Capitulation as well, and he throws in one of his main cities.

Unfortunately, as Mansa wouldn't capitulate until he was left with one city, we have to wait for the captured ones to come out of rebellion and have some border pops.

So we start pressing enter. Not before noticing we're suffering a very rare occasion of "Japanese Culture".

1907 In true Bolton style we bullied a new resolution through the UN.
Civ4P302024.jpg

We also get a Great Engineer. Just because we can and because we initially wanted 3 corporations, we found Creative Constructions in Group HO. I pressed printscreen a bit too late, but some text still visible in this screenie.

1910 Some cities have come out of revolt in former Mali land and start popping their borders. The inevitable has happened.

All this domination stuff is really cool, Shaka thought, but he was more interested in the graphs of his enterprise. One in particular:

Shaka was a happy man.

Congratulations to all on a nice game! Our corporations boosted cities and economy was impressive, I for one will look more seriously at corporations from now on. :)

Save attached from one turn before victory.

Hooray! Though really after we got our continent under Zulu control things were pretty much in the bag and we could have chosen pretty much any target we wanted. It was nifty to see so many cities turning out 1- or 2-turn tanks/bombers/etc. Comparing SP vs. Corporations, I think that in the end properly supported corps are more powerful but come later in the tech tree, require specific GP's, cost money up front, and really it's just easier to revolt into a new civic. Either way you have to re-do tile improvements.

Any other thoughts for another war-oriented game?

Nice work Nocho.....

So war oriented games....

1. Monarch Always war without picking a favourable map / AI is always a nice fun bloodbath

2. Schizophrenics Incorporated...
i) Can only declare war on Civs who like us
ii) Must try and stay peaceful with those that hate us

3. Girls vs Boys
Pick a mix of AI 50/50 Male Female, we get randomly assigned Civilsation
Must eliminate the opposite sex cant delcare vs same sex.

None of these have been thought through so they may be completely rubbish..

Ralph

@ Pindrus; I've always considered the Corporations<->State Property difference an interesting one to look at for a change, simply because I tend to go State Property and I think I've so far never really used corporations.

Corporations are usually thought of when going for peaceful victories, because the empires going for peaceful victories rarely have much land and cities - and as such have both more incentive to go for the high bonuses of corps and more incentive to spread them around to gain cash. Large warmonger empires are usually better off in State Property because the cuts on maintenance are huge and the increased usefulness of hammer improvements such as workshops or watermills + a production bonus will give you enough hammers to stomp enemies flat.

And don't forget we're using Shaka! Only he and Charlemagne can run corporations for actual profit ;)

@ everyone: I'm considering starting an Always War game on Monarch. I have fond memories of Shyuhe-6.5 and I like the format.

That is very interesting Paulus. Maybe because they were one of the new features to BTS (and I didn't start playing civ4 until BTS), but I find that corporations match also with large empires that have 'acquired' the resources eaten by them. A small empire often won't have more than a few excess resources to trade away, and if they're things like fur or ivory those even become obsolete late-game. It's usually possible to make some gpt for extra-resource deals, but I prefer taking things the old fashioned way. :hammers:

Monarch AW sounds fun. I haven't played much AW, but actually was a bit recently with Charlemagne :)

@ Ralph - What do you define as a map type that is too favorable for AW? It seems like continents is most often chosen for AW to limit the number of initial foes. Would you want to do pangea or fractal? Or maybe a large/hemispheres, so that there'd be 4-5 civ's in the immediate vicinity?

It was a fun game, thanks :). I rarely get to play around with corporations as I really like the earlier ages and tend to roll a new start before finishing old ones. Don't even remember when was the last time that I used air forces :D

In any case, I think I'll have to skip the next game. I'm sure it will be a bloodbath for AI's, whatever settings you guys choose :)

Monarch AW sounds fun to me too... We can peak around at the recent emperor/immortal AW SGs for good initial strats... :)

Nice game. Well done, congratulations, :band::band:

Looking forward for your next game. :)

Any Map where it is hard to squeeze isolate AI's in corners significanlty increases the difficulty of AW. Avoiding continets / archopelagos etc so you are forced into ealry histile contact ratchets things up noticeably...

I doubt AW Immortal Pangea is really winnable. Its when you rapidly face incoming stacks from 4+ different AI's it becomes immensely hard.

This is a good example of Hard Monarch AW settings

Ralph

Just curious, does AW also mean war between different AIs or only between you and AIs?
