Pangaea vs. Continents

Does anyone else have this problem?

Most of the time when I start a game and select Pangaea (one land mass) I end up with at least two continents (but usually two). This happens about 4 out of 5 times when setting up games with Pangaea landmass.

I play 1.29 and Emperor level, and it is really frustrating to not be able to get the single landmass I want.

I have noticed this also. I have found that selecting the least amount of water gives the best results for Pangaea.

I often get one pangea and one smaller continent. I think it has to do with the amount of water, as Hunter said.

OT: Welcome to the fora, Admiral Hunter. How is Admiral Hayes these days? ;)

Yepp, a lot of the time when I try to generate a pangaea, I end up with either two large continents, or one really big and one smaller one. This usually happens on only the larger maps, though. The small and tiny maps usually give me one big landmass.

When I ask for Archipelago, I usually get a couple wimpy looking islands strung together Continents.

Pangaea is slightly easier, I think. Once I get my military machine humming along I can usually conquer everyone pretty quickly...

I've recently changed to playing 'small' maps with panagaea. All five had two major landmasses - once with one less than half the size of the other, and four times with the 'smaller' one being closer in size to the 'larger' one. Once, all the civs were on the same continent; the other times they were spread over two continents. I'm playing warlord level.

Small sample size - I just assume I'm been very unlucky on these 'small' maps. But I've switched to the smaller maps to force me to improve my combat skills - and my latest game is REALLY forcing me - I don't have horses or iron and my army is relatively weak.

In over a year of playing standard or larger maps, I've gotten one large continent less than half of the time with panagaea.

Seems bugy to me!!

If you have ever read my 'I finally did it!' thread?
I won a conquest on a huge 1 landmass pangea.
But occasionly when I start a new game on pangea, i get 2 big continents.
I like to play pangea because I like land wars. :tank:

The 2 continent pangea maps are just another way Firaxis is trying to make navies important. ;)

Why even give the user the option of Pangaea if the functionality does not work? If I wanted continents than I would pick continents. If I want one connected landmass, then by gosh, I should be able to get it, regardless of the reasons!

It makes me angry that this does not work well at all.

Ditto on all points! Maybe we can create a forum in which we can save the first turns of games that we have played to conclusion that are TRULY contiguous. I would be the first to download!

know the feeling. 2 continents = not right. maybe in the next patch they'll fix it (if theres a next patch)

i have never seen one land mass on a pangaea map, and i find it annoying if im on the small continent as i dont believe in having a big navy, as they can no longer attack coastal cities and the bombardment ability is a waste of space on the boats. it must be firaxis trying to make the navies more important

I guess, according to the world builder:

cuba + america = 1 continent
england + europe = another continent

it is all about continental shelves.

I hate navies. They can only bombard cities, which I dont like. I liked in CivII when Batteships roaming the seas meant much more than a few points down or a population loss.

It's one of those paradoxes of Civ3.

You ask for archipelagos, you will end up getting a bunch of connected continents.
You ask for pangaea, you will end up getting two large continents separated by lots of ocean.
You ask for continents, you will end up getting 4 or 5 continental islands.

It REALLY makes it difficult to play the type of game you want to play. For example, if you wanted to play archipelagos where none of the civ can have contact with each other until advanced navigation, but you end up getting continents that are connected by land...
