I've played a few pangea games but none of them have really been that fun for me. I used to play on continents but stopped because I heard the AI doesn't invade over sea. I was wondering if thats still true or if a patch has fixed it.

The AI will now sometimes try to invade across continents, but it is still not competent at doing so; if you have even a few military naval vessels, you can pretty easily repel an AI amphibious assault (as the AI make no effort to protect its vulnerable embarked units).

The biggest problem I've found with continents maps is that one AI civ usually runs out of control and dominates the other continent pretty early, and has often won the game via culture or the UN before the player is in any position to do anything about it.

Indeed, even on Prince this happens, since the AI gets :c5happy: as though they were playing on Chieftain; thus if they can streamroll, they have no reason not to.

The AI is very very lousy at sea tactics, don't even mention sea battles because it just won't happen. They send caravels yes, but an armada, no, heck even barbs are better at sea than the other AI.

Huh, that's exactly why I do play on continents. Spend the early game mopping up the situation on my continent, and just when a pangea game would be effectively over I have to play catch up to some super power ciV on some other continent.

If it works out right (although it doesn't always, and sometimes the AI runs away at a ridiculous rate), then you have a game that's competitive to the very end, rather than one that's over before you discover coal.

Pretty much what I like about Continents.
I have my continent under control, and then I have a big challenge in another continent for the late game.

I just wish the AI was better at naval management.

Seriously. Although, I'll confess that if it was I would looooooooooooose. a lot.

Yay for destroyer dominance.

If I want to go for military victory, I play Pangea. If I want to go for any other kind, I generally go for Continents. I realize this makes the game a bit easier, but, if I want to be beaten with to a peaceful condition, I'd rather they actually beat me (and not just harass me). Sometimes I'll do otherwise (I'm thinking of playing as Germany soon and having continents so I won't be likely to win until I get Panzers).
