Well, I tried out the German Civ at the beginning of this week after watching the History Channel and their stories about the German tank battalions etc.

Wow! Do I love the Panzer tanks! They are absolutely the hottest thing you can have at the time. They do fade in value after the other Civs catch up.

I only play on Chieftain level because I enjoy a slow game of building etc. After building the most efficient Civ on the map, I decided the English, French, and Russians needed a lesson in manners. I invaded with about 15 Panzer tanks and destroyed all three in one swoop. I owned the entire continent and won easily....(Chieftain level of course)

How valuable would you guys rate the Panzer tanks in the harder levels etc?

Not very valuable. They do have one extra movement, but they are not stronger (right?).
Panzers or normal tanks are good when you first get them, but you will soon need atleast 100 of them to do a real war on Deity - huge map. The situation gets far better when you get adv. tanks.

The extra movement is definitely a plus. Not only is the regular tank a step back compared to cavalry in the aspect of blitzkrieg, the extra movement also means that the panzer can attack one more time.
I disagree that MA are superior to panzers. Compared to each other, the MA is the better unit, but you must see them in their corresponding time frame. The panzer has a higher chance of defeating infantry than the MA has of defeating MI...

I partly agree, but you miss one point concerning the timeframe.
I say that Panzers/normal tanks are good when you first get them, but not for long. This is because the enemy (if he is as advanced as you) WILL get MI not long after you get the Panzer/tank. And after all, the MA is far better against the MI than the Panzer/Tank is ;)

I do not really like the Panzer because on higher levels it faces MI. Without bombardment - forget it..... and if I bring 200 Artillery along the extra mave doesn't speed the attack......

Exactly my point ;)

And by the time Panzers come, I'm most of the time the most powerfull civ around.
I usually end my warmongering with cavalry.

Then I must asume you should try a harder game ;)

Opschepper!;)
The point is, if you wait 'till MA, you can just as well go for the spaceship victory. If you can't finish with cavalry or artillery, the panzer/tank is your only option (besides nukes and 'bombers' ) that comes before.
Of course MI appears relatively soon after panzers, but the AI will most likely first go through rocketry and fission anyway. And that's eight turns or something...

Panzer Armies look good on parade, too!

Wait til MA?
I start attaching with Horsemen and Swordmen.

They are great if you are ahead in Techs but if your alittle behind and the enemy already has MI it's like Killer said, you need Arty + Panzers which negate the speed advantage Panzers have.

Altho' using Arty plus Panzers negate the speed of Panzers, you can sometimes benefit from the Panzers' ability to attack trice in the same turn. Panzers can also move over a hill or thru a forrest and still attack, which do appreciate.

Still, I'm not denying that the Panzer's advantages over the reg'lar Tank aren't very great compared to some other UUs over their reg'lar counterparts (about all ancient UUs come to mind). Still, it certainly outshines the Cossack and the F-15 in this regard.

Zachriel...How did you get that many armies? That is the best way of phrasing my Q without exploding. As for Panzers, I find the movement point very useful for getting them upgraded. Move close to the town and then attack; end of move for a normal tank. If its feasable then I would attack again with my panzer to get it upgraded. In this fashion it is likely you end with an elite army, good for attacking defenders who may only have 3 HP

He's probably built "Military Academy" if you build that in a good size city you can crank out an Army every 5 turns, that plus the regular GL's you get really can add up

Quite right! I built the Military Academy in Salzburg, home of the Bismark's Forbidden Palace. Salzburg in 1876 AD had already completed every available improvement, including Manufacturing Plant, Mass Transit, Nuclear Plant and the Pentagon. Four turns per Army in 1876 AD, but five in 1828 AD when the "parade of tanks" was assembled.
