Patch 1.61 refuses to recognize existing installation

I currently have Civ4 installed (playing it right now actually), but I downloaded the 1.61 patch, tried to run it and get the following MessageBox.

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed.

This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

Huh?

Try to uninstall and reinstall.

I'm having the same problem, I unistalled and reinstalled, but I get the same error

Were you able to uninstall without any error messages?

Yeah, the uninstall ran fine, same with the install. However, I can't see the game in "add-remove programs"

Weird. Try installing the game in safe mode (random idea).

Aaah, by the way, have you bought your copy of Civ via Direct2Drive? If so, you must search for patches on their site.

Thanks, I downloaded the direct2drive version and that worked. But it's weird because I bought it at bestbuy... oh well
