Installed civ4 on my laptop yesterday and it was working fine.
I installed patch 1.74 today and now when i try to losd it, it says error missing shader files (or something like that) so i cant play
I had the same problem. I assume you are on Windows 7? I fixed by running the DirectX 9c installer from microsoft: here. The version that ships with Civ IV aparently is not compatibly with patch 1.74. You need to get the latest version.
