Patch 1.74 WTH!?!?!

Ok, I just fired up Civ IV and I went to the options screen because I was going to remove the Space Race victory as that was always the way my games ended up.

While I was there I said, what the heck, why not check for updates. Low and behold there was, version 1.74.

So I let the game download and install it, and low and behold when I double click the executable I get an, "the application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." error. YAY!

Now I like a dutiful CIV IV player go to Start>Program Files>Fireaxis Games>Civ IV>Visit Civ IV website and the latest patch that is advertised is 1.61. There is no mention of the "patch" I just downloaded. What's going on? This 1.74 patch also adds two short cuts to the help files in the program directory. One called View Readme, and one called View Readme File.

I'm a little irritated right now, so excuse the poor quality of this post. Has this happend to anyone else? Are there any recommended courses of action?

Thanks in advance,

J.

Ok, after my rant I did some google searches for the DLL and came back to several posts here. Apparently this is known issue, though why they have not come out with a patch that works is beyond me. Also, I just reinstalled CIV IV less than a month ago. 1.74 is well over a month old. I know after I installed I checked for updates and only got the 1.61 patch. I checked several times after that. Why did this patch just show up now?

I had the EXACT same problem. It drove me insane, I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing worked. Turns out I needed to update my DirectX. That fixed everything. It's really annoying how they didn't make the simple fix more obvious...

Have you updated to the most recent DX9 update (June I think) released by Microsoft? I've seen reports of that helping. I really don't know how to get it to work for sure, though.

I'll have to take your word for the patch only being released 10 days ago. The first line of the readme file states:

README
Last updated 21-May-2007

This is why I thought it was created quite a while ago. Also, why haven't they posted an update to their main website stating that it was released? 10 days surely is enough time.

Also, it still does not explain the time stamp the help file from this latest patch has, which indicates it was created May 21st 07

Alexman from Firaxis posted somewhere on this forum that it was to be released at the same time as BtS - so the fact that it was created earlier does not really matter since they timed its release (almost) to the same date as they released BtS...

I have a problem that patch as well. I had to quit Civ 4 and restart it. I click the icon and it says "Error loading shader libraries" Any Ideas?
Edit: Just need Direct X 9.0 Whoops!

Okay. This really is easy to fix...
Download Direct X From Microsoft.com. Extract it to a folder. Open said folder, double click on DXSETUP, and follow the installation process.

I just ran into the same problem about an hour ago after downloading the new 1.74 patch.

Bat Barry Bonds is right---it is an easy problem to fix---provided that you have read this thread.

Thanks Barry, it's up and running again!

I updated to the latest DirectX9c (August) and I get an error message 1706 during installation of 1.74 patch. If you search the forum for 1706 you get a million hits. Seems it comes up with every Civ patch ever done. Are you just suppose to ignore it or what?

I proceeds, but first it stops when the progess bar is near its end and I have to click an "OK" on a dialog box saying that it can't finish the update because "No valid source could be found for product Sid Meiers Civilization 4". After I click OK to that then it instantly gives the familiar Civ 4 colored box saying the update is complete!

I tried the 1.74 patch with no CD in the drive.
BUT I also reversed that install using a restore point then used Beyond the Sword CD to install it which has 1.74 on it and it installs the patch before anything else if it detects the older version in Civ 4.
In both trys I got the same result. Error 1706 No valid source could be found...and then completed!
Yes it does advance the Civ 4 version to 1.74, it says so in Add/Remove programs and in the Advanced option in the game.

But I get the error message, then the sudden "completed!" and also the game will not uninstall in the conventional manner in Add/Remove programs but I have found on this forum several other ways to uninstall as well as the restore point method. <<< Those two things are what bothers me.

Game will boot up and run though. However I didnt go to far into any game with the 1.74 version. I have gone far into a game with the 1.61 version which comes on the Civ 4 (Gold version) disc I bought.

Gold version? You are lucky that BtS installs at all. They messed up the file system of Gold and for some people BtS will not install because it does not recognize Vanilla (Gold), for you it probably does only partly and this one check is somehow not passed while the others are :crazyeye:
