Patch v1.21f ReadMe is here!!!!!!!!!

I've seen more than one post expressing concern as to whether or not previous saved games will work after the patch. Although I don't know for sure I'm guessing that only the default map sizes for large and huge maps were changed. I would guess that games started with the larger sized maps will remain the same and only newly started games will be affected. It also sounds like you will still be able to play larger maps (than huge) via the editor (for those of you with a lot of time on your hands!)

I certainly hope this is the case anyway. If not Firaxis might as well not have not bothered with the patch because I'm not giving up my save games!:D

This is purely a guess, but I'm willing to bet it was because of the corruption on huge maps. You either set optimal cities higher or reduce the map size. Since they want the default rules to make the average person happy (without doing their own tweaks), they just made the map size smaller so they'd get less complaints about corruption AND less complaints about game speed.

Those of us who want bigger maps (not me, my comp is way too slow) can go in and make the changes ourselves.

"* Editor: Added new unit abilities to allow bombarding to be lethal against land and/or sea units. "

Does this mean that now bombardment units can KILL units, not just knock hitpoints off them?

I still remember the pi$$ and moan session after 1.17f came out (AND 1.16f). It seems everyone is PO'ed when the patch comes out, (and when the new one is almost ready); it's still a complaint fest. Either stop complaining or be more constructive. I like the quote... "Would you like some cheese with that whine?"

I think this patch is really big step to the ideal of Civ III, but I can't find any reason WHY Huge and Large maps sizes were lessed? I make them bigger to 256X256 and I think 180X180 - really BAD idea, but that's easy to edit :egypt: .

There's some more option that Civ III needs - NEW UNIT - ENGINEER, and NEW BUILDING - TRAINIG CAMP.
Engineers are very important:
* They can build airstrips out of cities
* They can build fortresses, walls and other some staff.
* They can build hydro-electro plants on the rivers and oil rigs in the ocean.
* They can reapir mech. units in the battle field.
* They can high, low and change terrains.
* They can be captured as workers.
Training camps are city structure that can upgrade units to regular, veteran, elite rangs for money.

But does this mean that we will never have more than one Forbiddan Palace to work with? Like Tribal Counsel, State Building etc.

What happens if I already have the FP (small wonder) and I capture a city with another one?

ok I think that there are a lot of awsome cool things in this pacth. But there were really three main things i was looking for and call me an idiot but i would like to know, if their will be a pacth for them or if they are in this pach already and i just havent noticed.
They are:

-Multiplayer, both through interet and hot seat (im not even fully sure that this is gonna be a pacht at all)

-A minimap so ican see what in the great beep im doing everytime i draw a map.

-Finnaly an option so i can choose exactly what civs i want to start in particular places.

Please im an idiot so please anyone with Info HELP ME OUT!

With the 1.17f editor, you could hit "Alt+A" in the edtor on most screens to get the add dialog.

That isnt an option anymore. . . . How are we going to add units, governments, etc?

:(

Dear brody

Hey, please, just take it easy. No need to get so personal. My post was not an attack on you personally or anyone else for that matter. It was simply a light-hearted observation, ending with the words “should stress that this is in no way a criticism, just a thought and a comment from someone who should know better”.

I’ve been playing computer games for nearly 20 years sometimes jumping in my car to travel miles to get a game I couldn’t get locally. I love 'em :).

Your first point, what is your point exactly? Sure, upon release, some games are buggy (some more than others), but that’s what patches are partly for. Er, and? As for balance, a well-balanced game is a well-balanced game, only a minority will normally disagree. CivIII is a good example – balance issues discussed are normally the same ones for most people.

Point 2 – I agree.

Point 3 - I agree with you in a sense, but how many people who bought civII sill play the mods 6 (or is it 8?) years later? Not many. Maybe the odd game now and then, but most people will have moved on to newer (but not necessarily better ;)) games.

Point 4. Er, are you referring to my post? Who’s whining? Certainly not me. I have absolutely no problem with being able to mod games – if I was a bit younger I’d probably be at it myself, and be one of the people posting excited messages! Re-read my message, I was referring to the fact that most of the changes are for the minority – big deal.

Point 5. er, now steady on. Do I really need to spell out why it was well over the top? I probably need to get out more just as much as anyone else (notice the self-irony at the end of my post “..from someone who should know better….). I was referring to the tone of some of the posts – IMHO I do find them a tad bit serious, as if people are actually offended with the patch not living up to their expectations. In hindsight, maybe I should have started with “to some of you, don’t take it all so seriously….”. Fair enough, apologies all round and the drinks are on me.

Anyhows, brody, if my memory serves me correctly, in all my years of using forums, I think this is the first time I’ve managed to get into a bit of a hoo-hah with anybody, and I’d like to keep it that way. So, if I’ve unintentionally upset you (or anyone else, for that matter), I apologise.

Right, I’m off for a bit of sunbathing.

Is there a reason I cannot use any unit icon past 83??? If this has been limited, I will be forced to go back to 1.17f or wait until the next one.

I was sooo excited because I can now add unlimited resources (although i dont understand why they allowed 24+ resource icons, then killed the add button . . . ) and I was going to add many units requiring those resources, and nailed the limit immediately. :(

Small wonders are destroyed when the city is captured, so the only ones you'll ever work with are the ones you build yourself.

Hello, I have created an engineer unit that can do some of those things. Check the link in my signature

To David:

I swear I already responded to this post, but as I don't see a response, my memory must be failing me...

First, this wasn't a flame meant entirely at you. I just get annoyed when people complain that there shouldn't be updates to the editor. The editor is what makes this game so powerful! I only wish more games had such an extensive editor... and changes to the editor usually coincide with changes to the game. For example, they changed the editor to allow more corruption tweaking, but at the same time they made the courthouse/police station more powerful for fighting corruption. So in theory, they've made us all happier (those of us annoyed at corruption, which is probably like 60+% of casual players as well as tinkerers).

Second, I may have misinterpreted your first post; I thought you were saying that we all needed to get out more because we were "excited" (meaning happy) about the new patch, but you seem to be saying not to take the patch so seriously (I assume you meant excited as in agitated), which is in 100% agreement with my point of view. I apologize - I assumed you started a minor flamewar and I was just gonna finish it :p oh well, my mistake.

Third, as for mods adding to the replay value, I don't know that a huge number of people still play civ 2, but there's still a good amount of response for things like the Civ 2 GOTM and such. And I'm always seeing news about new mods for Civ 2... with Civ 3 out, obviously a lot of Civ 2 players have dropped 2 to come to 3, but until 3 was out, the extensive power of civ 2's editor kept interest in the game, and allowed for more sales of Civ 3 once it was released... that was my basic point, that Firaxis spends no money on mods (fans do it all), but interest in the series is kept alive by their powerful editor.

no problems all round, and thankyou for your post and your email. it only leaves me one thing to say:

we shall wait for multi-player, and at such time, we shall go forth, upon which we will conclude, decide, determine, and resolve any issues between our two (soon to be) great nations.

well, you get my drift. :)

take care brody, and regards to wife and kid(s)!!

ps i read that firaxis were working round the clock to get the MP together, but i wondered if anybody knew approximately when it will be ready....a week, a month, a year? also, have firaxis ever commented on whether it will be an update or an expansion??

I would sooo love to play multi-player but I wonder if this will just be included in a patch or will we have to buy it?
