I just bought a new copy of Civ 4, the normal vanilla edition. It came on a single DVD. Installs just fine, everything works. I am running it on a Windows XP machine.

:(I cannot update it to patch 1.74 however, and I also can not install BTS.

When I try to install the patch I get this notice:
"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's civilization is installed.
This update requires that a previous version be installed."

When I try to install BTS it tells me there is a patch for Civ 4, tries to install it, then fails and terminates.

The game's read-me file states that it is version 161 and lists the changes.

Within the game's "About this Build" section it states:
Civ Version: 162
Save Version: 1
Build Version: 1.6.2.1 (0)
Build Date: Fri Jun 09 13:09:23 2006
Build: Final Release
Mod Name: None

I downloaded the 1.74 patch from this website and from the official site as well, neither worked. I placed the patches on the desktop, in the program files, in the firaxis folder, in the civ 4 folder, and in the patches folder, none of those locations helped it to find the installed version. I also tried this with the previous patches as well, 161 and 109.

I deleted the Installshield file - reinstalled. No difference.

Any idea what I need to do to get this working? I would really appreciate some help as I've spent many hours trying to figure it out.

are you sure it say 1.62?
try using the 1.61 patch first then the 1.74 patch.

Welcome to CFC :band:

Hi, yes, I used the 1.61 and 1.74 patches in that order. It always gives me this message:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's civilization is installed.
This update requires that a previous version be installed."

Any idea why it can't find the install?

:hmm:
this is puzzling then - did you try reinstalling the game? I would try to uninstall - then reinstall then patch to 1.61 then to 1.74 - that *should* work :dunno:

note: I will have limited online time the next 2 weeks so any further response by me will probably be delayed... :)
