Patches etc. don't work

I have this Civ PTW on which none of the patches or scenarios I download from here work. The PTW came on a Gold Edition thing which had both Civ 3 and PTW. Could this be the source of the problem?

Also, the place at the bottom left of the screen where its supposed to tell you which patch etc. you are using apparently indicates that I am using Civ 3 Vanilla.

Gold, as I recall, was fully patched.

Not sure about the Vanilla/PTW thing, as I don't have gold.
