patches: How do i see if a new one has been installed?

There may be a way within Steam. I don't know. This is the only game I've ever bought off steam.

Within Civ V itself, look at the startup screen where you pick "Single Player", "Mods", etc.. There is a number at the bottom center of the screen. It should now say 1.0.0.62 if you have the patch.

Edit: Got beat by the Moderators. Man they are good.

The version number is shown on the main menu screen at the very bottom. If the version number you quoted is the one you have, then you already have the update. Steam sends the update automatically as soon as you log in.

Related question -- how do I know if steam is even downloading the patch? Will it do it in the background, or do I actually have to be staring blankly at the Steam window?

if you are logged on to steam it should auto detect that a patch is available

you will see it pop up under heading LIBRARY - >
sub heading DOWNLOADS

The latest patch is about 30MB and you have to allow it to begin downloading before it will do it in the background

I have issues with steam
