pbem 'Lambda' proposed v1.61

Congratulations to DogBoy.

Relentless progress and leading from the front. Well done.

Thanks to you both for a great game.

Started on May 20 2006, so a blistering pace.

I am happy with my first completed game,
although badly confused about goals.

Need to step back and have a good solid read of the strategy forum, I feel.

Boy, did I get whipped!

Thanks guys! This turned out to be a fun game. When I took over as China I really thought I was in a losing position. I was in ice and tundra, with barbarians coming from all around. But I was lucky in that nobody else was around me which allowed me to expand. A couple of key city locations allowed me to do the cottage spam and when they matured to towns they were able to fuel my economy in a big way. I was also fortunate in that both of you were far enough away and fighting with the AIs so I was pretty sure you would not attack me. Towards the latter part of the game I knew it would come down a space race. Even though I was stronger than both of you, I dared not attack either of you because I was sure I would get bogged down in a war that I might or might not win, but what I was worried about was if I started to win then the other one of you guys would jump in and kill or seriously wound me. Therefore, I planned the building of my spaceship meticulously. You may have noticed that I built a large part of my spaceship in the matter of a few turns. I was also worried about England building their spaceship so I built Scotland Yard and put spies in their cities to monitor their spaceship progress. I knew exatcly how many turns they had left to complete their ship. And now I wonder if England ever noticed that one city was going to build the SS Casing in 6 turns, and then on the next turn it was going to take them 12 turns. Sorry for doing that to you, but I had to slow you down someway because there was no way I could keep up with you in production. Then all I had to do was put a bunch of units in my front line cities to dissuade anybody from attacking me. Stealth bombers flew over all the cities bordering me every turn to make sure I wasn't being sneaked up on. This included the oceans.

Thanks for a very fun game!

I'm not sure you needed to do that. My spaceship was not planned until the end, when I suddenly realised the game was coming to an end.

I assumed, because of the tech race, that I was behind, and the only reason I came as close was conserving cash and buying the space elevator, which gave me a late boost.

But I messed up on scheduling and the <whatever it was I was building in Coventry> was always going to come in 6 turns after all the others. Sounds like it wasn't this one you delayed.

Spies, I only read about them in the late game, but only seemed to be able to build 3.
I guess though, from the interesting bright dot in my territory in Semental's map, that you weren't the only one...

There was a brief moment where I started building Manhattan, temporarily bored with our relentlessly civilized behaviour, and dreaming of a late nukefest. But I hadn't really got <personal> time to plan and execute a war, so I changed to something else.

But the fact remains, if I can't win a tech race with Elizabeth and financial, I need to read up on how to play this game.

Thanks again.

You are right, I didn't need to delay your SS Casing. But at the time it was the first spaceship part I found with a spy and that got me worried. It wasn't until after I delayed that production did I get another spy into Coventry and noticed I had nothing to worry about.

I kept waiting for Manhattan to be built, but since I kept building my military I wasn't really worried about an attack.
